Possibly. A lot of the problem is that most kids/pre-teens/teens are sheep, they follow what the media tells them.
So baisically, if it's "cool" they like it. So, we must find a way to make the media deem jazz "cool".
The only problem with that is that they wouldn't be fully appreciating jazz as a genre, they'd just be listening because they were told to.
So there's hope, but there isn't.

I, being a teen, am a fan, and dispite that a steriotype DOES have truth to it, it is not all true. Like Rock, sojme people i know listen to it cause they like it, not cause it is popular... All you can do is try to get it played more, thats really it... What I am trying to say is that, dispite how much I love jazz, not all people do... The only real way to spred it is person to person... So just (and it is eisier since my friends are all in highschool and middle school), just to copie fav. songs and get the other kids hocked, i have already converted people... So that is really all that can be done...

To get the youth to respond to a particular type of music, it's usually made out to be relevant to them. If that would involve changing jazz to suit them, then it's not worth it. Why change a pure art form to fit another demographic?

No long explanation here, but I'm 15 and actually despise rap rock and other sorts of music. I myself prefer to listen to jazz over those. I play the sax myself and it would just not be right if I didn't like jazz. I like classical too by the way. I listen too it all the time, actually, I'm listening to it right now. cool

Now that, I don't agree with. I, too, play the sax. If I didn't like jazz, it wouldn't be wrong. It would just mean that my preferences are different. A sax player who may not like jazz may just be purely legit. Therefore, there's nothing wrong with a sax, trombone, trumpet, or string bass player (or any other instrument used for jazz purposes) not playing in the jazz idiom.

Yeah. no kidding. Each to their own.

I think there's a preconception of jazz as being very Frank Sinatra, very swing, very old folk music. Jazz is so much more..

Hmm. I think this is a moot point here. Jazz will always exist, whether it be mainstream or not, there will always be someone to pick up the banner and fight the good fight. It can't be forced... No, if children wish to find jazz, they can get direction to the right place, but beyond that, there is nothing you can do. Because of where jazz has gone, it will NEVER be popular again I'm afraid.... Well, it could still become popular, but we're years away from that. But, as I said, there will always be people who find jazz and make it their own. Do you realize that jazz is more popular among people my age group (highschool) than it has been in years? It's amazing but true. This has been aided by the many camps and summer workshops that, not all that long ago did not exist. We even have band programs at schools that allow kids to get into jazz. So I don't really think we need to necessarily get younger kids to listen to jazz. It has to be in some ways an independent choice.

biggrin biggrin Personally I think people in that age group are going through a "Phase" in which they do what their friends do. Once they reach 17 or 18 and get ready for college, teens begin to find a much clearer sense of their individuality, and begin to move away from what their friends like. I used to listen to alot of Rap music when I was in grade school, but During High School I got tired of it. I was browsing through the radio and I found a smooth Jazz station, playing modern, contempory jazz. I heard Walter Beasley's Coming at Ya and instantly I got hooked.

However, it should be noted that this isn't always the case. At 13 I was listening to shitty mainstream music. By fourteen someone had showed me an actual metal song (as opposed to the s**t like Slipknot that gets passed off as metal) and I quit listening to the mainstream stuff and began to explore the actual genre itself....which then lead me into liking rock, jazz, classical, and blues. Not everyone's true musical development starts at around 17-18 and some people NEVER start.

I'm 14, and I love jazz with a passion. I've actually ATTEMPTED to compose it... with a little success... but the only way to truly get kids involved in jazz at a younger age is to get them involved in MUSIC at a younger age. Music programs in elementary schools have been dropping like flies recently, and I know SEVERAL junior high schools that no longer offer music. That's where the problem lies. If I hadn't become a trumpet player in 7th grade, i would never have become a JAZZ trumpet player in 9th, and a jazz pianist this year. So perhaps more music programs earlier in life would help. After all, not EVERYONE takes private lessons as a kid... xd

All you have to do to get a kid into jazz, is play 'Tank!'
It is the opening theme to Cowboy Bepop. Its an awesome Big Band jazz song. Either that, or something like 'Groovin' hard' by Buddy Rich or Jazz Police by Gordon Goodwin
yeah! I listened to jazz before, but what got me into playing trumpet was Tank!. I was so overcome with joy when I got the sheet music for Christmas. Its really hard to play though... sweatdrop Someday I will play it!

Well, some artists are putting a jazzy style to their hits. Example: "Take it Slow" is very calming. While it's not exactly jazz, it's a baby step to get teens to listen to more sophisticated music.

I myself am almost 15 and am a huge fan of jazz music as a whole. There are certain to be others like me in the world ^^
