all parties need a healer (usually whm), a tank (usually pld or ninja), a refresher (brd or rdm, cor(?)) and some dds that can sc/mb together, including one who can pull (usually thf or rng).
Its usually easiest to form ideal parties around the tank so if you have a PLD tank you will be best with a rdm, whm, blm, pld, randomDD, randomDD
If you have a ninja you'll want a brd, whm, ninja, thf, randomDD, randomDD
All that is TOTALLY dependant on personal preference (no doubt someone will respond saying my party setups are rubbish haha, and can post some alternatives)

Dragoon/Dark Knight?
I don't know much about either jobs, so I'm not really critisizing here... but just what are the benefits to that combination? I'm curious.

I'm curious. that's a point - I assumed he meant "a drg or a drk" but i agree drg/drk isn't going to work. Its not usual to sub a job like drk because you simply won't have enough mp and your spells will be so weak they're useless anyway D:

I have no idea what you meant by the topic... If you mean a DRG with a DRK sub, this is what I'll say.
DRG/DRK has a good atk power, and a multipurpose wywern that can breath when WS and cure when cast magic. (But the wywern cures only when your HP or a member's HP is lower than 20% without the artifact head piece or lower than 33% with the artifact.)
Anyways, DRG/DRK is pretty useless in exp pt. If you want to go for a DRG sub in a pt, choose WAR or WHM to be a sub. They're much more effective imo.

Yeah I am 75 DRK. No drgs ever sub DRk's completely useless. At low lvls. Sub warriors. Atleast til 60 or 70 then i'd reconmend you subbing SAM or NIN depending on the event or task. and if you're ging to solo Sub Blu or Whm .
Only jobs that sub drk are Rdm( for stun purposes. mainly endgamed used) and NINs for kiting/stun purpposes (seen it done on kirin ) otherwise drk obsolete subjob.
oh yeah you can sub thf at lvl 60 too always fun to ******** around with SATA

Yeah I don't know a huge amount about the game but DRG/DRK doesn't sound particularly beneficial, especially not in an EXP party.
For party structure, in at least in the early levels, you can't go far wrong with a WHM and a PLD, with a DD or two and possibly an alt-tank like a NIN or another PLD, and maybe another healer, like another WHM or a RDM. Later on I hear BRD/WHM is fairly sought after, though.

Like everyone says DRG/DRK is a waste of time together.
For a regular party, always have a healer (WHM or RDM) & a nuker (BLM or RDM) & tank (PLD or NIN or WAR). Those are the 3 must haves in any party. If you can't find a WHM or a BLM, you can get a RDM. They do both plus DD.
The best party I've been in contained the following: 2 RDM, 1 DNC, 1 SMN, 2 PLD. The greatest reason is that we all could heal each other and DD. We were only close to death once when a bogey attacked us while we were fighting an IT Pugil. I wish I kept all the people's name in the party. It was kick a**.
