Hello there, I'm a mediocre' sketch artist type, I draw mostly fantasy, but I'm horrible with shading! ABSOLUTELY horrible. I recently started drawing on the computer... because that's where I like coloring, but the issue is, I can't progress my art without practicing shading. Anyone know any good items to practise shading on?
I'm pretty sure once I get the general Idea down that I can learn, but for now I just need a nudge (or a push) in the right direction. smile

But i suggest checking out the first topic i mentioned first, and what i say about mass and 3d space. Ask me anything if u don't understand it.

Sorry I had my art program opened up trying to brain storm for the contest. I'm 19, and I like cartoonish style art with a little realism. (Of course I like anime too.)

try looking up some of masamune shirow's stuff online. Try to imitate his use of color and stuff, i think you will find it challenging but not extremely hard.

If you want to learn how to shade things, the best way is to work from life. If you can see with your eyes how gradients happen in colors, and how reflective light works, then you'll be able to transfer that into a drawing.
Try first off just trying to make 7 different shades of light-dark with a pencil, then try applying those shades to a simple drawing, like that of a box or sphere.
After that, it's really just a matter of practice and observation. The more your mind understands how shading works on simple objects, the easier it will be to apply that to complex objects from your imagination.
Also, I'd like to know what computer program you're using. Because if you're working with Photoshop (any version really) specifically I can give you some advanced coloring tips that will really help with blending colors. *It's hard when you're a beginner to figure out how to finesse layers and opacity and all that junk* But unfortunately if it's any other program, i may have some trouble helping out.

i don't know about computer programs......... but! i am very knowlegable in sketch shading. really, all it is is going from dark to the natrual color. it's a gradual change. if it helps, i know a technique to make it more obvious, but i think someone else alrady said it........ take 5 squares. shade in one on either end black, or as black as a pencil can go.the shade each box a lighter and lighter grey utill you have a gry so light it's almost white. then apply that pricipal to a circle. shade it in using that method, only continue and don't lift your pencil. in the end, it'll look like a real shpere. tip: go along with the curves on the circle. it looks better like that.
