Okay so...this has nothing to do with anything....
which is why it's here. So who here has heard this song?

All of you.

And I'm sure that most of you think that the beginning lyrics go "la la la la bamba..." Because that is what it sounds like...In truth, the lyrics go

Para bailar la bamba!

We learned all the lyrics in Spanish class

Para bailar la Bamba!
Para bailar la Bamba
Se nessicita una poca de gracia
una poca de gracia para mi para ti y arriba y arriba

ay arriba y arriba

por te' sere, por te' sere, por te' sere

yo soy no marenero,
yo soy no marenero,
el capitan, el capitan, el capitan
bamba bamba, bamba bamba, bamba

....

I did it my memory! yays!

Weird Al

Lasagna Lyrics
Artist(Band):Weird Al Yankovic

La-la-la-la-lasagna
You want-a some-a lasagna magnifico
Or a-maybe spaghetti
Ay, you supper's a-ready now, where you go
Mama mia bambino
Mama mia bambino, 'samatta you
'Samatta you, 'samatta you

You should-a taste my lasagna
Ay, you no like-a lasagna
That's okay too
How about-a calzone
Some-a nice minestrone, ats good for you
Have-a some marinara
Have-a some marinara, I know-a you like
I know-a you like, I know-a you like

La-lasagna
La-lasagna
La-lasagna

Would you like some-a zucchini
Or-a my homemade linguini, it's hard to beat
Have-a more fettuccini.
Ay, you getting too skinny, you gotta to eat
Ay, mange, mange

(gargling)

Ay, you-a pass the lasagna
A-don't you get any on ya, you sloppy pig
Have-a more ravioli
You-a get roly poly, a-nice and-a big
Like you cousin Luigi
Luigi, Luigi, capisce paisan
Capisce paisan, capisce paisan

La-lasagna
La-lasagna
La-lasagna
La-lasagna

Hey
Hey

(laughing)

I always liked that song. It's cool how Ritchie Valens turned a traditional Mexican song into an American rock & roll hit.

Oddly, having read the lyrics, I realize I've been mishearing the line "yo soy no marenero" as "yo no soy muy dinero" whee

I have the Weird Al parody on my ipod. Now if only I could get a bootleg of "Chicken Pot Pie" (an unreleased parody of McCartney's "Live and Let Die").

// That has got to be one of mankind's best songs!
Even though I haven't a clue what the lyrics mean.
I'm no Spanish-speaker.
I just like the song.

it does tend to get stuck in peoples heads...

The lyrics, roughly translated...

Para bailar la Bamba!
Para bailar la Bamba
Se nessicita una poca de gracia
una poca de gracia para mi para ti y arriba y arriba

In order to dance the la Bamba
you need a little bit of grace
a little grace for me for you
and above and above

(y arriba translates to and above, but it is also a popular 'just shout it out' thing...I'm not sure which, so I'll just leave the rest alone)

ay arriba y arriba

por te' sere, por te' sere, por te' sere

Im not sure what this is...

yo soy no marenero,
yo soy no marenero,

I am not a sailor

el capitan, el capitan, el capitan

I am a captain

bamba bamba, bamba bamba, bamba

Baisicly, its just a song about a guy trying to get a girl to dance the la bamba with him...

Por ti sere (I'm trying to turn on the Spanish keyboard layout, but Windows is ignoring me today, so no accents).

That means I will be for you, as in I will love you only forever. Or possibly just dance with you forever, whatever smile

I have a soft spot for this song, but there are probably better Spanish-language songs out there.

My favourites include:
+ Suerte - Shakira (I was in Spain when this came out, so "Whenever, Wherever" just sounds weird to me)

+ Guantanamera - The Sandpipers. As far as I can tell, they've taken a piece of Spanish poetry (possibly Cervantes?) and set it to a melody. It's handy, in that the band translates it for you halfway through the record too. I can't sing it properly, though, because I have a Madrid accent and the song is either southern Spain or South American.

+ Malaguena Salerosa - I forget who it's by, but it's on the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack. Very bright, good beat, good melody. Also much less depressing than "Tu Mira", which is old school flamenco style and is basically about how the girl's broken up with him and when she looks at him it's like a knife in his heart. Delightful!

+ Cuidate - La Oreja de Van Gogh. A nice Spanish pop song, rather bittersweet and basically about a couple breaking up, but who will always remember each other.

+ Cuando tu Vas - Chenoa. She was a finalist in the Spanish version Popstars (Operacion Triunfo).

+ Dartacan y los Tres Mosqueperros. Couldn't tell you who sang it without digging out my DVDs, but this was the original theme tune to Dogtanian. Yes, Dogtanian is a Spanish cartoon (albeit part-animated in Japan, as so many are).

+ Silbame - Rigadon y Tico. Another cartoon song here, this time from "Around the World with Willy Fog". I believe it got translated into "Sail Away" in English, but the original is Tico & Rigadon singing about what good friends they are and how, if there's any trouble for one, all he has to do is whistle and the other will come running to help. Quite sweet, really, and a *very* good melody.

Anyhow, I kinda hijacked this thread, so I'll back away now...
