"You're not serious, are you?" Halomare said incredulously, gaping openmouthed at Bartemius. "You're not really going to-"

"'Course I am," he said plainly. "I'll do whateve' I damn well please, thank you ver' much." He stepped closer to the Genera Reactor pool, the chemical heat brushing his face. He cringed from the smell.

"But, you'll die, I mean, honestly-"

"Shu' up, would ya, nothin's gon' happen to me. They jus' tell the story ta scare kids." With that, he shed his large white coat and handed his heavy sword to Halomare, leaping into the large, cylindrical vat. For a moment, his heart stopped; a sense of fear trickled to the end of his toes, chilling his blood in the heated stench. He saw a scene from the past, him and Halomare standing at the foot of the vat ten years ago.

"My mommy said that they keep the horrible monster in there," little Halomare said.

"Your mom is full o'it," he retorted.

"Nuh-uh! She said that if you fall in, Razmael will swallow you whole!" She threw her arms out and slapped them together. "Mommy's brother did it when they were little, and he completely went bye-bye."

"You're just a girl. You don't know anything. I bet something else happens..."

He was brought back to the present when he felt his body plunge into the warm mixture. It calmed him. He felt no pain, and not a single sign of the terrible beast that was rumored to lurk in the pale green depths. He lifted his head, taking in the cool air.

"You idiot!" Halomare screamed, hugging her shoulders. "You're gonna be screwed up for life if you stay in that!"

"What a' you, my mother?" He dived down, barely reaching the bottom, and kicked off, launching himself updwards. He broke the surface, soaring back to the Pool's edge, shaking his hair off.

"Who's your uncle now?" He said, flashing a mischevious smile at her.

"Certainly not you," she replied. "I'm sure he was much smarter."

They slid down the side of the container. The orange moon hung high that night, and the myth of the beast was dismissed.

Dexel trotted down the street, a spring in his step as he whistled to himself. A youth sword he had purchased from Galban's Armory bounced lightly on his back. I gotta practice so I can be like Barty! He thought to himself as he turned a corner. A man in a deep maroon hooded coat bumped into him.

"Hey, thief! Get your a** over here!" An angry shopkeeper yelled at the figure.

"-----------" The figure said to Dexel.

"But wait...why?" Dexel asked. The figure replied by shoving the item into Dexel's pocket and taking off, waving goodbye as he turned into an alleyway and vanished.

Valace walked down the street, battling with emotions he felt he couldn't keep inside. He got his outlet when a man ran past him carrying a purse. He stuck his arm out straight, doubling the man over, and chopped his hand onto the man's neck. He kicked the man's legs out from under him, punching him in the stomach and leaving him on the pavement. A woman came running from the other direction and started screaming. "THAT WAS MY HUSBAND!" Valace walked away quiockly. "Oops."

"What was that all about?" Dexel said, more to himself than anyone else. The person had shoved a key ring into his hands, but only one hung from the metal. "What am I gonna do with this?" He shoved them in his pocket and turned the corner, whistling.

"Hey, Dex," Halomare was sweeping the sidewalk next to her storefront that she ran with Bartemius. "Whatcha got there?"

"A key ring."

"A key ring? That's cool." She put the broom down and tucked a stray hair behind her ear and sighed. "Well, what do ya think?" She gestured towards the newly cleaned shop.

"I think it looks great." Dexel saw a lockhole on the shop's door, and he pushed the key in, turning it. It didn't budge. "What's the point of having this if it doesn't do what it's supposed to do?"

"Well, for one thing, that's not the right key. I have it in my pocket," she said, jangling the shopkey in her pocket, "and secondly, it's not really the act of doing something. It's just nice to have something to call your own." She hugged her shoulders and hummed to herself.

"Something wrong?" Dexel asked.

"Oh, no. I'm fine. Hey, how about we go inside and get some lunch." She bent down to his height and straightened his unruly hair.

"Yeah, ok. Just as long as Barty isn't cooking. His food tastes like vomit."

"Whatever you want. Barty's out anyways." She led him inside while listening to him babble on and on about what he had done that day. Before closing the door, she peeked outside cautiously. Seeing no one, she closed and locked the door.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The generator hummed faintly in the deep blackness. The red-coated figure stood beside a long table, his fingers tracing the woodlines. The door opened, and he turned around.

"----------" He said, greeting the new arrival.

"It is not for you to correct!"

"Please, I have no choice..."

"No! I will not allow this to happen-"

"Shut up! Just SHUT UP!"

"...Please, ------- , I ask of you, allow me to correct my mistake!"

"NO! You can't do ANYTHING!"

Dexel shot up, screaming and kicking in his bed. His blankets were sent flying to the floor, and Bartemius hustled into the room, snapping his fingers for silence.

"No, no...you...you can't..." Dexel's flailing subsided, and soon reduced to feeble swinging until he was calm again.

"Wha' the hell is goin' on?" Bartemius said as he stretched and flexed his arms.

"...Huh?" Dexel looked at him sleepily. "Oh, hi Barty...what're you doing up?"

"I...wait, what? What am I doing up?"

"Yeah." Dexel acted like he had just woke up. Bartemius stared, dumbfounded, at the youngster.

"Well, you..ugh, screw it. Go back ta sleep."

"Breakfast!" Halomare called from the kitchen behind the shop. Barty produced a loud snore in reply from down the hall, while Dexel was already up, bouncing around the kitchen and pestering his guardian.

"...and Valace said..." he trailed off.

"Oh, so Valace said that? What else did he say?" Halomare rolled her eyes upon mention of the boy's name. The incessant stream of words continued for hours, even after the shop closed.
