Just out of curiosity, does anyone plan on having a homosexual character in their story, or am I the only one?

I usually do; Engel and Keiri almost always make cameo appearences in my stories. And especially since this story is set in the world of their main story (mostly. There will be many alternate universes).

Still, I don't think they'll be able to fit into the main plot. I know Tobias (my MC) doesn't meet them until much later in life, and I'm not sure if my plot will cover that part of his life.

So probably not, which is a first for me. I almost always have at least a tiny bit of slash or femslash. (I mean hey, 10% for the population of the world is non-heterosexual, so 10% of my characters should be, too, right?)

You're right. It is a good idea to add a character like that to diverse your story. It could potentially improve your story and make it more realistic ^^

(Btw, good luck this year on nanowrimo! biggrin )

I'll add a homosexual character if it fits the situation, but I'm not going to add one just for the sake of adding one. To do so seems kind of like a cliche effort at breaking the seemingly unwritten heterosexual standard for characters.

But even if I do add one, I'm not going to overdo it. A character is a character, and unless their sexuality plays a direct role in the plot progression, I feel that integrating it as a major focus point only adds distraction from the overall story itself.

In this year's NaNo story, I have one. His sexuality isn't important to the plot, but he does flirt with my male MC throughtout the story. It's mostly for comedic effect, since my MC is kinda naive about sexuality, and doesn't really get what is going on.

My main story- the one I've been working on for 10 years now- has several gay characters, including my MC. Most gay characters aren't overtly gay, nor do they act feminine. One or two of my guys look feminine, but that plays a part of their background and why others think they might be gay. Most of the time, sexuality doesn't play any significant role in the plot, but for my MC, his issues and difficulities accepting his sexuality is very important to the growth of his character.

I said I had 2 in the poll, because my romantic pairing is two guys, but technically, they're not gay.

Their culture doesn't make the distinction of homo/hetero/bi/pan-sexual.

Ishaan suffers from sexsomnia and has raped a few people in his sleep, both women and young men. Even though it wasn't his fault, his guilt, shame and self-loathing have isolated him. He wants nothing to do with sex, seeing it as part of his curse.

Roan is an incubus, wandering the planet in search of random sexual encounters so he can feed on sexual energy, mostly with whores and prostitutes, both male and female. He's always afraid someone will discover his true nature so he never stays anyplace for long.

Their relationship is one of mutual need, which develops into a strong friendship, and from there into love. Ishaan may have a slight issue with Roan being a man, but Roan couldn't care less either way.

I haven't chosen my plot yet (second-guessed myself on my planned one), but one of them has two gay characters.
One's the son of a murdered CEO/dictator of a company-sponsored colony on a planet with more oil than water. The other a is a kind of... space-age "middleman" who saves him from one of the dinosaur-esque aliens on the planet by shoving an oxygen tank down its throat and sneaking him off back to his inherited colony after he's exiled to die and then picked up by a country nobody knew existed. =D

I don't think there was such thing as a gay dinosaur, so my other isn't much to explain. x3

My main character will end up in a heterosexual pairing, but I want to have one of my other characters in a gay one... the only problem is, I have him, a girl, and the two characters in the straight pairing... I guess I need to make some more characters.

The plot of my story actually revolves around a gay character and a bisexual (or heteroflexible) character. However, aside from these two and the gay character's boyfriend, everyone is straight; or, everyone mentioned at least.

It seems to me a little cliche, though, to hear of NaNo writers writing gay characters because I see a lot people who fangirl on the side writing it. Now, I don't exclude myself from that, but the entire purpose of my novel is to bash stereotypes all to heck. It's an attempt to write a mainstream scifi novel that just so happens to have gay characters. Not a gay lit novel that just so happens to be scifi, which is what I'm used to seeing.

Since my nano is one in a series, I have one gay character in a previous novel that may make an appearance. However, he is the only canon homosexual character in the story thus far.

I have another character, an MC who claims to be pansexual and flirts with EVERYONE. And I mean it. He even flirts with the main FMC's love interest from time to time.

My NaNo is set in a culture where everyone is assumed bisexual until proven otherwise. It takes place in an all-male university, so all the relationships and interactions are between guys.

My MC has had relations with both men and women and really has no preference. His best friend strongly perfers women and has no experience with men. The man antagonist is a lust faerie and will screw anything. My favorite character, though, is a sullen wereshark who seems to have no interest in anyone.

I'm living with false hope

And my eyes just want to see a ray of light

I'm gonna find it in my fairy tale...

Eh... I have no gay characters this year either. I really should get some in, but I don't want to force it or anything.

I actually have two stories that I am doing, one of which is officially for NaNo. The other is kind of a pet project I have been working on for a few years, and that one is actually centered around a homosexual couple.

It is a bit of a fantasy novel, and I have not completely planned it out, but the secondary MC had a heterosexual relationship in the past, so at the very least, he is bisexual. He is an Avian, sort of like an Angel and his current mate, Daniel, is a fire elemental.

It is MPreg, so I am not sure when I am going to publish that particular story, if only because I need to work out a few more wrinkles in the back-story.

Actually I have three homosexual characters and a bisexual this year. Which is what actually launches the problem and the story. The government is homophobic. That obviously doesn't go over very well with my characters, which is what makes the plot progress.

I have one lesbian and one bisexual in my novel. Any other characters are still in the closet and I don't know about it.

Poor Kirra. She finds out her sister is a lesbian when she walks in on her and her girlfriend. redface
