First of all, since I never do, it feels kind of weird making a serious topic for once. BUT OMG REFRESHING. xd

HOKAY ANYWAYS. >W>;

So like, I'm nearly 18 (The 1st) which means I need to start making some uberbig decisions about my life.

I've decided I'm going to attend our local college full time, if I can. (It's like a three minute drive from my house.) And get a part time job on the side, considering my summer job is over. ;w;

I'm not sure yet what I'm going to major in, maybe Visual Arts or English/Literature. Honestly I'd like to do both, which is possible if I want to take the time and get a double degree.
Or I could get a transfer degree.. or a general one if I really can't decide.
There are a LOT of classes I'd like to try, too...
I'm not sure if I want to go to another school after I graduate College either, but that'd definitely a possibility.

I srsly need to go talk to a counselor and stuff. XDDD They'll make me take a placement test, which makes me a bit nervous. I'm sure I'll do fine, I get really good grades, but the thought of math in anything without a LOT of time to work it out makes me squirm. That's what the placement test is FOR, though.. BUT ANYWAYS.

So I'm thinking since College is HELLA EXPENSIVE nowadays that I'm going to need to get financial aid or a scholarship or something. And I know that takes a REALLY long time to process and work out so I need to get the ball rolling soon...
I've heard FAFSA is a good one and there are a ton my sister's boyfriend mentioned that I can't remember the names of, so I'm really not sure which I should go for. There are so many. o___o;

I know a lot of you are in College. o_O; What'd you guys do? Do you get financial aid? A scholarship? Just pay for it?
What's the best way to go, do you think?.. Advice of any kind?
ILU GUYS. <333333333333333333333333333

TL;DR - SEE ABOVE.

FAFSA is always a smart choice, as you can get a ton of small-amounts of help and cover college for a while. Also see if there are other organizations in your state that can waive fees completely. California has one that can do that so I imagine others exist in other states as well.

If you really don't know what you want to do, definitely go Undecided and work on general education first. Once you decide on a major, try it out. Don't be afraid of not liking or changing it as many, many people change their's about four times on average before reaching one they like. Also, if you plan to work, take the minimum amount of classes to be considered a full-time student and work you way up if you feel you can do more.

I wish I applied for scholarships/financial aid. Paying for college is teh suxx0rz. ;-;

I have lots of financial aid from FAFSA. It's the only way my rent gets paid. 3nodding

From what I've seen, even though a lot of people have it in mind when they start college, most people don't actually end up getting double majors. Honestly, just getting the ONE major is hard enough. At least, that's how it is at my Big 10 university. They make you work for your bloody classes...I can't recall a single class I've ever taken there that I could have "coasted" in. Instead of double majoring, people much more often end up picking one major and, if there is something else they really enjoy studying, they get a minor in it.

When you first get to college, start off taking your core classes that you're required to graduate, along with one or two classes in the subjects you're interested in in majoring. That way, you can figure out if you really want to do those things for the rest of your life, and if you don't, you won't have lots of credits that don't apply to your major or graduation lying around useless.

Also, totally don't worry about what you're going to do in college right now. Part of college is figuring out what you want to do with yourself! When you're actually there, learning the things you're interested in, it becomes so much more clear. On top of that, college classes will often share with you what it's like to be out in the workforce for that particular field, going beyond just teaching you the subject itself. For instance, my creative writing class has a professional author come in every week to talk about themselves, and my journalism class had a reporter from the Star Tribune come in and talk about what it was like.

FAFSA doesn't like me. emo

I managed to get some scholarships from the school I'm attending, though, so I can kind of pay for school now, hooray! :3

From what I've seen, English/Lit classes involve writing a TON of papers. Luckily I tested high enough that I don't have to take any. I like writing, but I don't like doing it all the time. So if you double-majored, I think it would be really, really tough. You could probably pull it off, but if you want to have a social life I don't recommend it. xD

If you're not sure what you want to do, take some Gen Ed and a couple classes that interest you. Maybe that will help you decide. And if you want to change your major it's probably not a huge deal. I know it isn't here. Or you could just not declare a major right away, and pick one up when you think you know what you want to do.

Oh, a piece of advice: Talk to people. I'm one of those people who doesn't really talk much, but I've gotten better about being somewhat social and I'm really enjoying it. :3

And don't stress about what you're going to do after college. You have plenty of time to figure that out. <3

FAFSA is the only reason why I can be in college... o_o

And yeah, you should do the FAFSA, and see about applying for other scholarships too, you'll need all the money you can get your hands on, trust me... ^_^

And if you need help with your math, just ask, I'm sure that there's plenty of us here that can help, including myself... ^_^

Yes, it is easy to change your majors! At my school, all you have to do is go to your advisor person and be like "I want my major to be DIS lolz" and you're done. And the authors I've met aren't really nationally known outside of the state of Minnesota and the university, so you probably haven't heard of any of them. They are still cool people nonetheless. heart

The only thing I can kinda warn you against is doing what my brother did. :/

He went to college for partying, failed all his classes and used all his student loans on things that weren't very student-like.

And now he's in debt living with my dad.

So yeah. Don't be stupid <333 Though I know you wont.
