So I have a HUGE mouth. And I am very rash about things. A lot of the time I hurt my mother's feelings and I know respecting parents if of the utmost importance, but sometimes I don't respect her. I always feel guilty later on and apologize to her but I still think she is mad in some way. Some questions I have:
What is the best way to gain Allah's mercy? How can I hold my tongue (it seems extremely difficult for me) How can I concentrate on my prayer and not other things? (sort of off topic) When I pray I find myself drifting off and I really want to stop that. Also, my sunday school teacher said if you believe in the zodiac things like 'aries, tauraus' and all that Allah won't forgive you even if you do fifty prayers, or something like that. I don't nessacarily believe in those things, but I used to read them for fun. Will I be severely punished? I have faith in Allah and I have faith that he is merciful, but I am just really torn. x]
Thank you and may Allah bless you for reading this.

Best way to gain Allah's mercy? Best way, I'm not sure.. The best way, in my opinion, is to try to live an islamically moderate life. Instead of trying to be a saint, just try to be a good person. Instead of praying 50 nafil, pray the usual 5 times a day.
As for holding your tongue.. I have the same problem from time to time, and I often forget to mind myself. I also have a very strange mom who seems to lack common sense most of the time and who's very sensitive.. In cases where anyone is pissing you off, don't hold your tongue for the sake of their feelings, but only for the sake of Allah.. it makes it much easier. Another option is just ignoring what your mom says, or pretend to agree and not listen >xD, though I'm not sure if that'll work for you. Ever since I was a small kid, I actively practiced "selective hearing".. just pretending I didn't hear something that's useless or doesn't deserve a response xDDD. My parents took my to the doctor thinking I had hearing problems or something since I wouldn't look at them when they'd call my name >xD
Concentrate on your prayer? That's also hard.. But one thing I found that works, is concentrating and imagining that you are actually before Allah, that Allah is infront of you observing you while you pray. Makes you a lot more mindful.
As for the zodiac thing, do you feel as if reading that stuff for fun deserves unforgivableness? Do not take the words of our previous generation to heart.. a lot of them are way too fundamentalist without being reasonable or practical. A lot of times in Islam, if something feels wrong to you, it either isn't or you're not understanding it correctly. Here, the issue is believing in astrology.. I'm sure you don't obviously believe that you're honestly compatible with anyone just because of their birthdate, so you won't be punished by just saying that stuff for fun.
And btw, nothing is unforgiveable in Islam.. So I don't know where your Sunday school teacher is coming from. Most of the time, these teachers just vaguely remember something their mother told them, then would strongly reinforce those taboos and

I'm not so sure on all the other questions, but I can for sure answer the one about paying attention during prayer. I have the same problem. Usually what I'm thinking about is just random stuff that happened 5 mins ago. Then I realize that I'm praying, and all of that other stuff shouldn't be anywhere near important than praying to Allah for a few minutes. Like, I'd think to myself "that thats selfish and it can't even compare to Allah, its not as if your praying for an hour, so be respectful of these few minutes." Then I'd stop thinking about it and be serious for the rest of the prayer.
It works for me. I dk, I hope that helped lol. I would have posted the day after you posted the topic, but I didn't know how to explain it.

Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu,
First of all we all most recognize that Allah the greatest is the Rahman and the Rahim, the most beneficent and the most merciful and we many not call ourselves muslims without realizing this.
To answer your first question Allah is the Rahim the most merciful there is one hadeeth, a saying of the Prophet (SAW) that says a man was running around on the day of judgment asking around if anyone could give him one last good deed so he could go to paradise and a man with only one good deed gave it too him thinking it could do no good for him and that he was bound for hell anyway. Following this act of mercy of the sinner Allah then says you think you are merciful I am the most merciful and to prove this he allowed both the sinner and the man begging for one last good deed to go to paradise. in another hadeeth it is mentioned that allah has given mankind 1 mercy in this live and 99 in the hereafter and verily that one mercy is kindness because even the beast is gentle to its child. The best way to seek Allah's mercy is to ask for forgiveness for you passed sins and strive to be a better Muslim every day.
To answer you second question i think the best way to hold our tongues back is to not get angry because often the slip of the tongue is caused by getting angry in a hadeeth, the Prophet (SAW) said when you get angry if you are standing sit, if you are sitting lay down and make wudhu. Whenever you get angry saw Aouthu billahi minash shay dhanir rajeem. Translation: (I seek refuge in Allah from shaytan (satan.) Because the satan is the one that causes anger. And always remember your mother is the one that birthed you and held you in her womb for nine months and fed you and gave you everything you needed and there is nothing you can do to repay her in this life.
To answer you third question the main way to gain concentration in salaah is to learn the translation of what you really are saying in salaah because and realize you are praising your lord the one who created you. Another way is to pray more optional prayers and to make them long and in optional prayers even if you only know one surah you can keep repeating it.
To answer your fourth question remember allah is the ghafur the all forgiving and the rahim the merciful. I am not a scholar so i cannot say whether this is halal or haram but i would suggest to stop doing it because it gives you no entertainment or benefit and there are other things you could be doing.
I hope this helped sorry it was so long Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu
