“Hey, Tamu!”
Adamu called out as he padded into Tamu’s cave, eyeing everything slowly. He needed to talk to his half sibling BADLY. It was major news! His soft brown eyes narrowed as he gazed around and sighed.
He was so very lost. He needed his only true friend to help him.
With a soft tone he called out again.
“Tamu?”
His ears pinned back as he sat himself down and waited. Maybe he would come soon.

The king had gone off on yet another border patrol. He didn't understand why, but he went on them quite frequently, even though nothing of importance ever happened. The Kusini lands were always quiet and peaceful, with no threats ever directed towards them or one of their number. Yet why did he insist on patrolling the borders so many times in one day? Perhaps he really was insane and felt that there was some unseen threat lurking about, one that he intended to find before it struck.
But until then, he would resort to simply reasoning that it was habit that kept him doing such silly things. He had been overzealous when he had first taken the crown, and so now he couldn't shake himself of that.
Heading towards the den, Tamu felt it would be nice to take an afternoon nap. He was a cat, after all, and they were incredibly lazy during the day when the sun was hottest. He flicked his tail and smiled to himself at the thought. Just to plop down anywhere and drift off into a land where he never had to worry about anything.
At least not yet, a voice sounded in his head. He froze, fearing the worst. Was his Voice back? Hadn't it had enough when it had forced him to do that terrible deed? The large male shivered where he stood, but before anything else could happen to further scare him out of his wits, his round ears picked up the sound of someone calling his name. Happy for a distraction, he followed the voice.
"Yes?" he called, standing at the entrance of the cave and finding his half-brother seemingly waiting for someone. "You called?" he asked coolly, despite his earlier fright.

”Oh Tamu, thank the gods... I'm so sorry to bother you..”
Adamu trailed off into a deep sigh and stood before his king with wide eyes. He looked half-sick. His whole body trembled as he spoke out, showing his true nature to his brother.
“I know, I know we aren’t so close but you’re the only family I have- that I can really talk to, and I need to talk to you badly. I found a girl I like, you see and I have been with her for a while, and well.. The other night she birthed cubs Tamu, my cubs! Three boys… they are all so wonderful, but I fear I may not be a good father..”
He stopped and sat himself down again, bowing his head toward Tamu.
“Forgive me for saying but... your father was a b*****d to me! He never gave me the time of day because I wasn’t of his blood... all I ever wanted was for someone to call father after my mother died, and he couldn’t even grace me with that simple request, I never had a father… I want to be the best father I can be but I fear it so.”
He stopped and slowly let his eyes meet Tamu’s.
“I want to be good to my sons and I want to protect them, I want to be more like you. Tamu.”
He almost could feel tears coming on but held them back. Adamu felt so weak and powerless. He was just a boy without a title or place within this pride, he didn’t mean a thing to anyone and he always felt so left out and worthless. How could he take care of a mate and three cubs now? His head would surly explode.
Gazing at Tamu again he spoke out softly.
“Do you think I can do this, Tamu?”

Tamu smiled, almost amused, at his nervous half-brother. He felt closest to Adamu out of all of his siblings, fully related or no. He had a certain respect for Adamu, as he always seemed to have the pride's well being in mind with everything that he did. He was beginning to see him not only as his half-brother, but also as something else, something entirely... professional? Was that the right word?
Chuckling, he shook his furry head. "It's no bother, I assure you. I was just out on another silly border patrol."
When he heard Adamu murmur that they weren't so close, the king's ears fell back slightly. He liked to think they were close, if only a little. Perhaps he had had the wrong impression of their relationship. But, that could be settled later. There were more important things to attend to. More important things such as--Adamu having cubs?!
Tamu stood there with his mouth slightly agape. He must have been really blind, to have missed a pregnant female all of this time. Lionesses had a gestation period of three months, and somehow he had missed her during that time? But it wasn't a cause for anger or anything else of that sort. The brown male actually found himself completely overwhelmed with joy. More additions to the family!
"Congrats, brother!" he exclaimed, suring forward to give the new father a manly butt with his head. "Don't worry about not being a good father. I feared the same thing when I found out Masuka was carrying my cubs. I swear I was going to pull out all of my fur!" he laughed. "It may seem difficult and maybe impossible in the beginning, but the joy of cubs and of being a parent just seems to solve all problems. Besides--"
He paused as Adamu continued talking, saying how his father had always been a b*****d to him. Tamu frowned, never having imagined Asi as particularly... well, mean. But he would never think Adamu a liar, either. There must have been something going on that he hadn't seen.
"I know it won't do much to change anything, but I'm sorry for what my father did. It was wrong of him. But you won't be like him. Besides, you've got the entire pride to help you. You won't be doing this alone, remember. I'll always be here to help, and so will everyone else." He smiled at his brother, slightly amused at how scared he was. It reminded Tamu so much of when his litter had come.
Nodding his head, he sat back comfortably. "I'm confident that you can do this. And I'm confident that you can do so much more. In fact, I want to make you my heir." He knew it was tradition to choose one of his sons, but Adamu had shown him so much recently, and he felt that he had simply earned the position. To him, a leader who had earned the position was better than one who had simply been handed it. He was sure his sons would understand. Hopefully.

Adamu didn’t mean any harm with his words, in fact he was having a really hard time finding the right ones. He knew he was close to Tamu but he also knew he could only speak for himself. He couldn’t try to figure out what Tamu thought- that was just rude. His ears drew back as he listened to Tamu’s words before he felt his head being lightly butted.
That made him smile. He was growing into a man! His mane had gotten so long… maybe this family thing wouldn’t be so bad. Maybe this could work. His soft coffee eyes narrowed as he gave Tamu a full-hearted smile and spoke.
“Thank you, Tamu.”
But, with Tamu’s last words Adamu’s heart sunk into his chest and he went numb. Did his brother know what he was saying? He was a heir? But, he didn’t understand. Crossing his eyes almost he sat in thought before speaking out with a slight stutter.
“T-Tamu, are… do you know what your saying?”

Tamu simply couldn't keep the grin from his face. He was an uncle again! He would have to ask Adamu if he could see the cubs sometime, though right now probably wasn't the best time. He figured the cubs couldn't be too old, and he didn't want to put any unnecessary pressure on them or their mother. Or their father, for that matter.
"Sure thing, brother. You just need to remember that you've got an entire pride to help you out. Even if you were to leave--and I hope you don't; I'd miss you too much--you'd still have family, or me at least. No matter what, I'll always back you up." It may have sounded corny or lame, but he felt that Adamu needed to hear that someone was on his side. He knew all too well what his brother was going through, the pressure and the anxiety.
With those words spoken, the king became more serious. He was naming his brother heir now, a title that was supposed to go to one of his sons. This was a decision he had to contemplate. He had thought a bit about this, and felt that it was time Adamu's qualities be recognized, or at least let it be known to Adamu that they were. And he generally felt that the pride would benefit from having the other male lead them one day.
"I know exactly what I'm saying, Adamu," he chuckled slightly, though still serious. "But, of course, if you don't want to take on the challenge, you can always decline. I don't want you to feel alarmed or overwhelmed, but I did want you to have the chance to consider."

Adamu was really stunned, he couldn’t fully grasp what Tamu just did, but he felt an overwhelming feeling consume him. it felt so right, he felt important, needed, and this feeling was just too good to be true. Nuzzling his face into his brother’s chest he smiled and spoke out.
“I’d be horned if you would consider that title for me, give it to me none the less.”
His ears pinned backwards as he stopped and thought about his predicament.
“But my mate, would she be able to stay by my side, here in the pride with me still, she has been living with me.. is that okay?”
He didn’t want to lose her or his cubs!
“I need to be able to keep my family, you understand…”
He didn’t know what duties came with the title but he was willing to do just bout anything for Tamu, except, not leave his family behind.
“But, if I can.. then I’d gladly take my place by your side, Tamu!”

Tamu smiled and rumbled affectionately as his brother nuzzled his face into his chest. Males weren't typically touchy feely, but he figured the occasion called for a little brotherly love. But his smile faded when he heard the word but come from Adamu's mouth. Seconds later, however, and the smile was back.
"Of course. She would be queen beside you. Believe me, I know exactly what you are going through," he chuckled. "When I met Masuka and fell in love with her, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to take her as my mate because she wasn't royalty. But we aren't strict in this pride, and I was free to make her my queen," he explained, butterflies rising in his stomach as he mentioned his mate. He had been completely exhilerated when he had learned that the Kusini pride didn't demand that its heirs and kings marry other royalty. He probably would have given up the position in order to be with Masuka and their family.
When Adamu answered that he would take the king up on his offer if he could keep his family, Tamu was overjoyed. "That's great!" he exclaimed, jumping to his paws. "I may not be the best king, but I will teach you all I know," he promised.

Adamu just smiled and nodded slowly. He was going to make Tamu happy; he was going to show his brother that he could do it! He would do it; he would become the best heir he could be, so that someday he could carry on Tamu’s line, his legacy.
“It’s good to see that a king can still keep his happiness, even under such pressure.”
Adamu spoke out with a deep sigh; he wouldn’t have to give up his family. That pleased him.
“I can’t wait to tell her about this, she is going to call me a liar! It’s all too good to be true.”
He was on cloud9; he just couldn’t comprehend the magnitude of what had just happened, all that he knew was what he felt, and he felt good about this. Real good.
“Thank you. Thank you so much for this, Tamu.”
