Think of how much money you would save on gas.... Imagine the environment... Stopping the car would make electric friction instead of heat friction so hitting the brakes charges it! The US has the technology to build electric cars, just hasn't made any yet. Why do you think we haven't? Because were so accustomed to gas? Today in my history class we were talking about what would happen if other nations stop importing oil to us. the US doesn't have ANY oil to drill. Thats when electric cars need to come in. They go up to 120 mph which is plenty enough and you save 97% of your money when charging. There is no by-product. If all that, why do we stick to gas cars?

J'aimerai toi...

This is a wonderful idea. When you brake you charge the car, which is something completely new. However, what if you are taking a trip on the highway and you don't brake as much? It's a bit of an inconvenience, but this is still a wonderful idea for those trips in town where there are stop signs every block!!!

Also I have a hybrid now and the engine powers it and when going down a hill it powers the batteries. It's a really cool car, the next step up. The REALLY cool thing is is that you just tap your key on the dash board and hit the start button. The key authorizes the car to start. It does the same with unlocking. Its soooooo cool!

Yeah, they are pretty awesome. At the moment though, I think hybrids are the way to go... I mean, if the majority of electricity is made from coal power plants, and the cars do take a lot of electricity to charge... they really aren't that beneficial when you think about it.

But I guess once clean power (nuclear/ solar/ wind etc) supplies the majority of electricity they are a pretty good idea, it would be great if the cars really took off and became mainstream.

Electric cars are really only useful round cities and for short- mid distance trips as well. For the moment anyway. Still, since cars emit more fumes (because they use more fuel? .... well, for whatever reason) stopping and starting like in city traffic, it really isn't such a bad thing. That's what they're mainly used for today, I think.

What you were saying about hybrids, is that my Uncle has a hybrid and has 50mpg! He can drive anywhere with it. It has all the features an electric car would but uses gas as well.....

We truly do need them. Not only are the gas prices rising every day, but I just did a power point on endangered species and these cars could help!

There's a reason. Imagine it.
No more oil.
No electric cars.
What will happen?

Because the oil companies are bying off bueracrats, buying up patents, and generally doing all they can to make sure we keep buying cars that use gas.

There are plenty of other alternative fuels as well- ethanol, gas and hydrogen for starters. But which technology will become mainstream- it's really quite hard to say. Maybe electric will become the cars of the future, but something will have to be done about the power source because- well, like I said before, when you work it out it isn't that beneficial to the environment. I hope to see the change in my lifetime, it would be so cool! They will have to do something eventually, there's no doubt about that.

The law of conservation of energy has something to say about electric cars. As Freaj pointed out, they won't ulimately make that big a difference, unless the electricity that powers them comes from a clean source. Many ecological solutions are just marketing schemes. If you power your car with electricity at home, and that power comes from fossile fuels, then you are only exporting pollution, not elliminating it. It would make cities less polluted, which is a very real benefit, but if the goal is to reduce total emissions, then bigger solutions are needed. Hydrogen fuel cells have the same problem, because splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen requires electrical energy as well. If hybrid cars had solar chargers, then they would be making a real reduction in total emissions, but could still run on cloudy days. Also people may need to accept the fact that people should commute less and live closer to their jobs. Elliminating urban sprawl would do a lot to accomplish this by reducing peoples' commutes.
