To have a decently funded band program. My school has one of the least funded band programs in the state. All the entire band has gotten in the past 10 years was a new tuba, a 3 new mallet instruments a new bass drum and 1 snare. grand total of 8000 over 10 years the rest has been earned through very few band fund raisers. Our timpani, vibes, bells, flugal horns, and school drumset are all ancient and incredibly beat up.

I look at the other division 4 bands and they have brand new everything. Decent timpani that aren't made of fiberglass, new wind chimes, and even a good sounding gong.

So I ask, what is it like to have a properly funded band program?

That sucks, not having nice instruments. Our school doesn't really support us money-wise, either. Most of our money comes from fundraisers, and we don't have the same budget every year. Just recently we lost the band fee that students' families were supposed to pay so we could have some money for a decent year. So, now it's even worse. But the community likes us and is willing to give us money, so we have decent equipment. But it's pretty stressful trying to get a good amount of money each year to do all the fun stuff.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you have many fundraisers? Does the BD just not set them up?

I agree, that sucks to have old instruments.

At our school, we have an incredibly large group of Band parents known as Band Boosters. they work with the school to get us our stuff. We only do two fundraisers every year, a car wash and christmas wreath-making. But we also have an incredible amount of kids in our band, so they go pretty well.

Other than concessions at football games and a single car wash for percussion we have no fund raisers for band itself. Our BD just isn't one for fund raisers I suppose.

I feel your pain. Back in HS, we had to rent a UHAUL truck to get our big stuff to the competitions and back, and took school buses everywhere. I've talked with people from other bands (namely Carmel HS, Indiana), that get up to A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS a year for the band budget... they have their own indoor marching facility, to say the least. Crazy, ne?
