I'll be applying to art school in a few short months, and after having my portfolio reviewed by a MassArt professor a few weeks ago, it was made clear that I need to work on portrait drawing.

I'm currently taking a class on the topic every Friday evening, but the instruction isn't as intensive as I had hoped. sweatdrop

But anyways, since I'm building my portfolio and trying to make it the very best it can be, I WANT CRITICISM!!! I WANT INSULTS!!! I WANT TO KNOW OF EVERY TINY FLAW IN THESE PICTURES!!!

I've also updated my gallery, and would LOVE to have SUPER-HARSH criticism there as well. I made a whole new topic for my portraits, because I really need help.

For the record, these were all drawn in mt first and second class for portrait drawing, except for the skull (which was tossed in because it relates to the portrait drawing stuff...)

Portrait drawings are always hard! I remember when I was a freshman taking figure class, I had to draw a portrait of myself and of a classmate. I made myself and my classmate look tremendously horrible, crying

Just out of curiosity, which art school did you apply to?

I think, the first 2 portraits of the woman (same person right?) you have the proportaions down all right. But the 3rd portrait of the man, his chin or maybe that shading there on the bottom is throwing me off thinking his chin is too leveled up. I love the skeleton and nice choice of colors! heart Oh wait, I didn't give you insults, damn... um well I can't give you insults because I'm the type of artist who loves doing abstract art and sucks at drawing and painting but I tend to give out really good constructive criticism.

^^; good luck and hope you get in!

have you taken any life drawing classes?
at first i thought it was a style of drawing you were trying to show
but if those are trying to be actual portraits it lacks a lot of distinct features

for example the one of the man

everything seems to blend together too much
it is hard to see the different side of his face which makes it look like his face is a big lumpy potato
however do you notice how the eyebrow area is well defined though, that is how it should look like to define the rest of the facial features

first two also have the same problem
you can see how the cheeks bones are poorly defined
and where the nose to forehead looks like a caveman

use more contrast to define these features and less blending
you really want to avoid blending smudging with your fingers or hand because that leaves a muddy gray look that you don't want

the last piece looks like you used pastel which i was never good at
i would avoid mixing colors that looks muddy unless if you really wanted it to look that way, like the blue background color that turns muddy on the left side distracts me for some odd reason

Thanks a bunch! ^.^

I'll try to work on defining the features better, and using less smudging. And I'll tyr to bring out the contrast a bit more.

I have gotten better with pastels since I drew the skull picture though, thanks to some help from my art teacher.

My drawings won't matter all that much once I'm in college, since I'm probably going to major in jewellery arts and minoring in either glass or ceramics. But I DO need a strong portfolio to get me accepted at the school of my choice.

Serial 2-387, I haven't applied yet. The schools that I'm interested in don't have thier deadlines until February. I'm planning on applying mainly to schools in Boston. I'm hoping to go to either The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts College of Art, or the Art Institute of Boston (which is a respectable school affiliated with Lesley University. It's not one of the Ai schools!) I'm also applying to RISD just for the hell of it, if I'm accepted, I might go there. My back up schools are Salem State College and The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

It's a good thing you have it all well and thought out, planning back up colleges is a very good idea too but I'm sure you will do well. Good luck to you and hope you make the right choices. heart

no bad... but I think you are over-shading a bit. Try to get some more highlights in there so that the features don't blend together so much.

let me guess... charcoal?

Oh! also work on your proportion more. if you look closely at your drawings you will notice that you are loosing the eyes, nose and mouth.

^^;

if you want I can get my hands on some amazing tutorials.

check out this guy's work.

It's amazing. I'm working to become this good someday.

Good luck and keep practicing

I would definitely suggest more distinct features, and if that becomes troublesome, try a bigger paper.
Portraits are the hardest. I think the only surefire way to get better is to keep practicing!
