Another '06 NaNo scene. This is the other one that I liked and wanted to share. Also based on a real event. ^_^
After Jeff pulled out of Peter's driveway, he and Lydia went back into the basement. They sat in silence on the sofa for a long time, which wasn't really new for them, but Lydia had a feeling something else was going on. He was quieter than usual. Normally, they would talk a little bit. She also noticed that Peter kept staring at her. Something she still hadn't grown accustomed to. There was something in those beautiful brown eyes of his and she suddenly was dying to know what it was.
"What are you thinking about?" she said, as she stroked a finger down the side of his face. She liked the feeling of his beard. It was slightly bristly and yet soft at the same time. Peter just looked away for a moment and remained silent. Lydia frowned. "It's okay if you don't want to tell me," she said. What she really thought, though, was "I'm going to pout until you do."
He remained silent for another minute or so. Lydia wanted to ask again when he looked back at her with his big brown eyes and she felt like she was going to melt. Her stomach did about ten flips and her legs felt like rubber. She was thankful she was sitting down because she would have fallen over.
"I love you."
Lydia couldn't speak. Her mind began racing. Time seemed to slow. Did he really just say what she hoped he said? It was said in barely a whisper. Those three wonderful little words that her heart was screaming on the drive home the previous night. She might have imagined it. But, the look he gave her confirmed that she was not dreaming.
Tears began to fill her eyes and she clung to him. "I love you, too," she said, as she choked back the urge to bawl in his arms. All her doubt she had about her feelings toward Peter during the day vanished. She was in love with him. And, best of all, he loved her in return. She felt his arms wrap around her and pull her close to him. A wave of happiness unlike she'd ever felt in her life swept over her. She breathed him in. The smell of his hair, the slight smoke smell lingering in his shirt from the cigarette he had when they walked Jeff out.
She pulled away to stare once again at Peter's face. He was smiling and her whole body wanted to melt into a puddle on the floor. Peter leaned in and kissed her. She closed her eyes as his lips claimed hers and stroked his cheek with her right hand. Lydia prayed this moment would never end. It was the most perfect feeling in the world. This had to be close to what heaven was like.
Peter began to pull away. Lydia let out a small whine in protest and kissed him again. He pulled her tighter to him and they continued to kiss. The whole world disappeared as it had the previous night when he held her in the rain. She didn't know how much time passed, nor did she care, by the time they both pulled away. Peter smiled at her again and she had to look away again to fight back the tears threatening to reappear. She wiped her eyes to make sure she wasn't going to cry and managed to meet his gaze again.
"I love you," she said. Just in case he didn't hear me, she thought. But, she really wanted to hear it again.
"I love you, too," Peter said, smiling still. She put her head on his shoulder and sighed. This was the best day of her life.
