If the person is unconscious then they can hardly agree to the procedures.

I think if the person's in a coma, of probably indefinite length, with little chance of ever waking up, it's kinder to the family not to draw it out, but to allow them to go. Years of a family member being on a knife edge between life and death is hard; I have a friend who went through it, and it was an absolutely horrible time for her. Eventually, they did pull the plug on him, and she was able to move on. She was sad, but she said that it was better knowing he was in Heaven with God.

Now, I don't say that religious beliefs should play any part in this, but I believe that you get my point.

Point well made.

Though, I'd have to say our laws don't reflect the flexibility that is required for such decisions to be successfully made and carried out. Complicated issues like this are hard to solidify into a set ruling, which is why those who write these laws are all over the place on it. It's too case specific really and then you get people like in the Terry Schiavo case where not all of the surrounding family members are for the same option.

You say that religious beliefs shouldn't play a part in it, but they do; especially the beliefs of the vegetative person in question. If they hold beliefs that are against euthanasia (such as those of Roman Catholics), it thickens the brew because you have to consider both the wishes of the person and the wishes of the family. If a person don't believe in euthanasia and tells a few friends but their parents don't know about it and figure their child's beliefs are the same as theirs, you run into problems if they end up as a veggie. Then you get their parents saying "we know our daughter and we know she wouldn't want to live like this" and their friends saying "but she doesn't believe in euthanasia." And all the while, they're in a coma and can't tell anyone which is the truth. Thus the court has its hands full wading through all of the statements of everyone that's trying to speak for them.

Euthanasia. It's a hard pill to swallow when it has everything to do with the supposed "wishes" of a person who can't communicate for themselves.

All I have to say is screw the familly if it is the expressed wish of the person the it is the duty of the care giver and should not be up to the family.
