Strangely, I actually love Trelawney because she is so full of crap that she occasionally spits out some random thing that turns out to be true. Also (I think it's in the 5th book) I love the part where Harry sees her strolling down the halls carrying a bottle of brandy (which the throws into a potted plant) and muttering to herself.

All of you hating on poor Trelwyney. (except you, deep-in-music. Welcome to the Haven, by the way!)
First of all, she wasn't a fraud. In order for that to be true, none of her predictions could have come true. Therefore, since she prophesied the whole thing between Voldemort and Harry, and the bit with a 'red-head' for Lavender, she's not a fraud. She's the real deal. She's just so wrapped up in her inner eye, she's lost sight of the real world, and can't grasp onto her minor predictions. She can't differentiate between her own mind and her visions, so most of the time, the things she 'sees' are just her own creations, but because she's so out of touch with reality, she thinks they're real visions. This state, I believe, was brought on by an overwhelming desire to be a seer when she was younger, because recall how desperately she grasps at her linage when questions. Since she cannot remember when she has had a vision, she has tried to force herself to be a seer, and, in all honesty, gone a little batty. So, her visions of the future float in and out of her mind, and on the rare occasion she gets one right, no one believes her, because the poor woman drove herself a little crazy trying to be what she thought was her right.
I think Jo probably did the whole bit between Ron and Lavender on purpose, to give Trelwyney a bit of credibility. That's just to much of a coincidence for my taste. It was done on purpose.
