Susamajii sprinted to the stream. He wanted to return to her as soon as he could. She was such a different person when she was helpless, and he was becoming very fond of her. The fishing was easy, and over quickly. He carried her the fish, and she ate it quickly before closing her eyes in slumber. Days passed in this manner, with Susamajii watching over her and caring for Abunai and Abunai becoming warmer and warmer to the male. One day, a few weeks or so after he injury, Susamajii noticed that the leg looked fairly normal again. "Bun," he said, using the pet name he'd recently adopted, "would you like to try walking again?"

Abunai playfully snapped at him. "Only if you help me up, Sue." She had been exercising her front legs quite a bit, and her good leg to flop around and drag herself around the clearing, at Susamajii's insistence, but had never tested her injured foot.

Susamajii smiled and slipped his head under Abunai, lifting her to her feet. Gingerly, she put a little bit of weight on her foot, and then, grinning, put a little more on it. Susamajii slipped out from under her, leaving her standing all by herself. Carefully, she took a step. She only faltered a little bit, then steadied herself. Slowly, but without falling, she walked across the clearing. "You did it!" Susamajii shouted gleefully as she returned to him, wagging her tail. Then, his face fell. She won't need me any more... "I suppose this means... you'd like your private clearing back now?"

Abunai looked at Susamajii's drooping quills. He wants to stay? Smiling, she hobbled up to him and licked his cheek. "Actually, I was thinking... My territory's big enough for two kylan, and what if I get hurt again? If you want to stay... I'd love to have you."

Susamajii brightened immediately. "Have me? Abunai, I'll stay as long as you want me around." He noticed that she'd licked his cheek. Have me? He grinned, a bit slyly. "And in what capacity would you have me, my lady? As a cohort, a colleague, a friend, or... or..." He tried to say consort, but it didn't come out.

Abunai stopped smiling. "As a mate?" she whispered. At Susamajii's nervous nod, she smiled again. "Why... yes. I'm tired of being alone. You've shown me that not all kylan are turned away from me for my ferocity... in fact, it only brought you closer. And... I think I might have fallen in love with you." She blushed beneath her dark fur.

Susamajii nodded. His whole body was quivering with some strange emotion. "I think I've fallen in love with you, too." He gently licked her cheek in return, then laid his head on her shoulder.

"So... just like that?" she said, laying her head on his shoulder in return.
"Just like that," he said, gently nipping her shoulder in affection. "Just like that, my lady. Just like that."
