Sometimes when I hear a song, I think, "I wonder what it would've sounded like if..." and my mind comes up with a few things.

So, I was reading this,
Quote:
"Tonight, Tonight" is written in the key of G, performed on instruments tuned down a half-step so the actual pitch is G♭. In the original recording sessions, "Tonight, Tonight" was initially written in the key of C instead of G.[5] However, Corgan was not able to sing the song in C, so he wrote a version during the Mellon Collie recording sessions to suit his range.

and I don't know any theory or whatever, so how would've it sounded in the key of C? Higher, lower, etc.?

I'm guessing higher because G-C is a shorter distance than C-G. Although it could be either.

Play a G on your guitar. (On most standard tuned guitars, this is the third fret of the 6th string)

Now play a C. (Third fret on the 5th string)

Better yet, play their respective chords.

That's the difference.

Since they're about the same distance away from each other both ways it could have been written lower or higher, but most likely it was written higher originally. My guess is based on:

It's a higher sound to play in the key of C compared to G.

He had to rewrite the song so that he could sing it. Usually it means that it was too high.

To play a lower C you would probably down-tune or use a Seven String. I'm not a smashing pumpkins fan, but this is probably not their style.
