How on earth do you come up with them? Do they just come to you, or is there some kind of technique to doing it?

No, I mean songs where the singer is not singing the same notes that the guitar is playing.

Like an actual melody in the guitar, but not the voice, or vice-versa? If that's it, then, odds are, they're probably in the same key signature.
In key of C Major, they can use C, D, E, F, G, A, and B in any order, and it will usually (taking from my experiences) sound good.
And to get it to go with the song, they probably are doing the same intervals, or inversions of them, on different notes. This parts just speculation though...
I don't quite know much passed the key signature and the notes that cooresponds with them, so yeah...

In another similar thread I Well first a good thing to do is work out what notes you're exactly singing. Like pick out the tune on guitar and write down what notes they are. Then find out what chords go best with those notes, like if you sing an A, a C and an E in one bar then Am is going to be the most obvious chord to use. Doing this is a great way to start writing songs, and after you've gotten used to it you'll get more confident and just start to hear what chords should go where without having to write them down.

well just do it the plain way . Make a melody , find the chords or riff that would work behind it . It takes a while but a hit and miss system works pretty well .

Yeah, now that I've been working at this wort of thing for several months I feel like I'm sort of getting the hang of it. It's really more about picturing it in your head and coming up with it on the spot than anything else.

I have a melody that goes like this(played in first position with open strings)
Low E, G, A, #A, B,D, 1/2 rest, B,D,E
would it work If I also played the chords to go with it? (that means if i played an E chord, G chord, A chord, D chord, A chord, D chord, then an E)
