Hello everyone, I just joined the guild and have had a question I couldn't get answered seemingly anywhere else. I was wondering if anyone knew the service commitment lengths for the US Military, Marines in particular. I've always wanted to go into the armed forces however, don't think being a soldier all my life is exactly what I would like. I've always wanted to go in to serve and was basically wondering if you enlisted, how long would you need to remain Active and Reserve? I would hope to get into college afterwards, therefore would need atleast a general time table of how long it would be before I could attend.

From my understanding, the enlistment for Marines/Air Force is 4 years, give or take a few weeks... And after that, all branches of the military have an 8 year period where they can be recalled to active duty.

Im not sure if it counts for marines, but I know in the Army depending on the MOS you choose, will tell how long you have to stay in for. You should ask a recruiter about that though, but like the other person said, it usually is a 4 year commitment.

Koon Ahh thanks that helps, so it's like a minimum of 4 years active then about 8 years reserve? Eh, kinda, more like 8 years inactive... You're considered "done" but they can give you a call that says pack your s**t, and get on a plane... Typically it doesn't happen unless something huge happened. For the Army, I got 3 years, 21 weeks, but I'm extending it to 4 years, I can only serve 2 1/2, but where's the fun in that? blaugh

For the Air Force it's a choice between 4 years or 6 years. If you sign up for 6 years you normally get a sign in bonus. Depending on how bad they need bodies, will dictate how much the bonus is going to be. The bonus also depends on if the MOS needs to be critically manned. About 3 years ago they had a 2 year enlistment program, but that didn't last very long. I believe they got rid of that.
If you go into active duty for 4 or 6 years you have to at least do half the the time or 3/4 the time (I don't exactly remember) to be able to join the Palace Chase Program, which is basically switching from active duty to guard/reserve. The only problem with doing that, the military will tack on a doubled enlistment. So if you decide to do the program and get out on your 3rd year mark. They will double that and you will have to do guard/reserve for a total of 6 years. It's a small price to pay to get out of active duty.

For the Marines to get the MGIB it's 4 yrs Active or 6 yrs Reserve...
On that note, unless you are really committed to going to school and getting a good degree go active.

Depends on what you sign up for. I know Marines who have a 2 year active duty contract, with 6 years inactive reserve. My contract is 4 and 4.

i just asked about this not too long ago, if you go active theres more money in it later for college granted that you've served your 4 year committment. i'd also ask about the schools supported by teh branch, thankfully mine was and i am able to attend as long as i spend my summers, weekends, and any and all breaks by the school on base.
