It was indeed strange that the cub had yet to master the art of speech. He simply had not uttered a word in all the time he had been out and about in the world. He had found it good enough to simply listen, and wait, and more often than not he found he could understand more by just listening without quite trying to understand. He was only lacking in the ability to present his knowledge to the world. But it was alright. Something within him knew that sooner or later, he would find a way to talk just fine, although he himself did not know it yet.

He started out after the big yellow lion, taking two or three steps to his every stride. His ears were listening carefully for the words, and by the tone, he sensed that he should say something, that what had just been said was supposed to bring some sort of response from him. For a moment or two, he wondered what it was he was supposed to say. Or, in fact, what he could say. There wasn't much he knew yet - he hardly recognized words of speech, only the tones and the ways in which words could be spoken. He did recognize that one word, yes, but he had never tried to voice it aloud yet. He knew he could make noises, it was something that came to him every since he had been born. The mewling noises, but actual words.

He took a moment or two, staring concentratedly at the sand. He found that if he moved his mouth while he thought the word, they seemed to form shapes that, to him, seemed rather like they would produce different sounds. So he tried his voice. "A... Azarax."

Mpaji waited for some sort of sound and it was a long time in coming. Azarax the cub told him and he shrugged lightly. What an odd name, but then again, all the Firekin had some sort of crazy name. All of Kaanga's sons began with K. He was glad he had a nice normal name.

"Azarax," he repeated, just to make sure he could say it. A snicker came to his lips and he stopped.

The cub didn't talk much, and if it couldn't talk, it probably should walk such a distance. He picked it up by the scruff of the neck and placed it on his back, waiting until it regained some sort of balance.

"You shouldn't jump off when I'm moving, or you'll hurt yourself," with a reckless sigh he set off at a trot towards the rock outcropping so far away.

Please don't let them meet Uzulu along the way. . .

Somehow, hearing his name spoken in his own voice - in the big yellow lion's voice - made it seem hollow, almost like it wasn't quite right. Only, it was, and he had no idea what is was that told him it just wasn't the same as what he had grown used to hearing.

He felt himself swung up and away from the ground. From where he now was, he realized they had only really taken a few short steps from where he had been moments ago. It was a strange feeling, being so high up from the ground, and it took him a moment to find his balance again. He clutched at the thick mane before him, careful to not fall off.

It only took a few short strides before Azarax grew used to the feeling and soon found himself balancing without much thought to what he was doing. They were headed to somewhere new yet again...

Something drew his gaze, and he looked back to where he had been sitting before he had been found by the big yellow lion, wondering what it was that might have sparked something within him. Then his gaze lifted and for a moment, it lingered on where Ripuka had been not too long ago, before he turned and roved on, searching for whatever had drawn the little cub's gaze.
