I love Body Modification, to put it simply. I've already got 2 tattoos and 10 piercings (total) along my ribs and it has always been a very spiritual experiance for me to get, and have, these works of art on my body.
So, what I'd like to know is: How many of you out there use Body Modification for ritualistic purposes?
It's been done throughout the centuries by tons and tons of different cultures and, I think, in this modern day and age some people have forgoten the spiritualistic implications of tattooing. I got my piercings last night and some friends came to watch, right? My one friend's boyfriend was there and the two together were throwing off the whole vib and groove of the room. We told them this and when he protested I told him it was a very spiritual thing for me and his energies were throwing me off. He looked at me like I'd grown a second head. Why is it so hard to believe that pain is a ritual tool? Every religion that I've looked at, including Christianity, uses it. Does the talk of energies and psychic flows really boggle that many minds? Body Mod is so much more than "fashion"; it's a way of life!

DUDE, how did I not see this for so long?! I love bodmod. I think that most people who are really into it use it for ritualistic or ceremonial purposes even if they're fairly non-spiritual and/or non-religious. Like a tattoo for a loved one, or to acknowledge a life event, like a rite of passage.
I have one in particular dedicated to the goddess Kali. It is her name in the sanskrit script (that isn't actually called sanskrit but I can't think of it right now and I can't be fagged looking it up). I have it on the back of my neck ^_^
One day I'd like to sew my lips together (don't worry people, it would be a temporary thing as part of a play-piercing session or something) in a sort of homage to Loki. I know it sounds odd, but I've always wanted to sew my lips together. This is an excuse to do so.
And you're right about the piercing experience you had. I had my nose pierced by a really horrible piercer once. A piercing can be an incredible experience, and usually when I get a mod I leave the place walking on air, but this time I was ready to burst into tears because the guy made it such a bad experience. When I got my Kali tattoo done a couple of my flatmates came to watch, and although their input was good (e.g. like whether it was on straight, even and so on) I really didn't get as spiritually into it as I would have liked to, because their presence was distracting. It feels a little like an opportunity missed.

I'm not sure that I used it as part of a ritual, per se, it was more of an empowerment experience. I have a purple baby dragon above my left ankle. I feel like it protects me and gives me strength when I feel like I have none left. I'm hoping to get at least 2 more and I'm sure that I will pick 2 more that will some how be both of religious as well as personal significance to me.
I know I kindof went off your topic, this was just my experience. I do think that getting a tattoo or piercing would be a very spiritual experience and can in some way be used as part of a ritual. Especially if they have special meaning for you.

So, nearly a year later: I'm back!!
Sorry for the disappearance, but it's been a very very hectic year. *Sigh*
Back on topic. I'm now a Piercing Apprentice and couldn't be happier to dedicate my life to Body Modification. ^.^ Which brings me to my next little experiance... I've gotten into Suspensions (basically hanging from hooks in your flesh) and it is simply amazing. I'm an Indian, and they have a Sundance which is this exacte thing. I'm very far removed from my culture and it's so awesome to fhave found somethign I can connect to again. In fact, next Friday I'll be going up. It's a certain position that I've tried many many times, and I'm so stoked to finally get up all the way and master it. I'm determined to accomplish this, and nothing's going to keep me from it. It's simply amazing what the human mind can acomplish, even over it's own body...
Anyone else have some Suspension stories to share?

That is awesome! I have watched suspension as part of a spritual ritual and it was so intense! It is so great that you have found such an amazing conduit for your spirituality. I hope your apprentiship is going well. I look forward to hearing more about it.

They look so peaceful up there... like angels, almost.
For the longest time I've wanted to experience suspension..

I have three piercing myself and hope to get a few more (once I save up for it) also, now that I'm legal, I'm finally able to seriously plan for the tattoos I wish to get. I'd love to try scarification...and I have the perfect tattoo for it to go with!

The county next to us had suspended a girl for having piercings (because they were against the schools dress code). They had to let her back in (piercings and all) because she claims they were for religious purposes. Apparently she and her mom are members of the Church of Body Modification.

Uhhhh huh. Alright, I guess.
I mean, as an aspect of religious practice, sure. As an entire religion, no. But which one they're going for I'm not sure.

a county? you can suspend someone from a county for piercings? wtf. that does seem weird as a religion by itself tho. I really have wanted a tattoo of wings of some kind (in b4 cliche sweatdrop ) or some other symbol that represents something spiritual to me, but I keep going back and forth on what, and on where to go for said tattoo, I feel kinda plain with nothing on my skin though razz

I've been thinking of getting something in runic, either on my fore-arm or my shoulder. All twisty-wise like you find on the runestones. I just need to work out what I want it to say.
I actually don't have a single piercing. I never even had my ears pierced, which is apparently so unusual for an female of my age that people I've known all my life keep giving me earings. WTF?

I hope to someday get a tattoo of a cherry-blossom tree and a chandelier. They both seem to have this magical aspect among them.

My government teacher used that example when we were studying the first amendment. It got a good discussion going. On the topic of bod mod, I'm too much of a weenie to get anything my ears pierced. I would like to get some tattoos. Love, actually. A few years ago I knew a girl who wanted to get a corset piercing. She also wanted to edge a tattoo she had with blacklight ink.
