To put it simply, this is were and talk about what you tought Death note was about before even reading anything about it, watching any trailers, or should I say, when you knew nothing at all about it, besides seeing a couple of pictures (or even if you didn't see any).
Well, I saw lots of picture spoilers before I even started watching it, but what I tought Death Note was about, was this: (prepare yourself to read the stupidest things one could ever think of)
I tought L and Ryuk were the same person, and Near and Rem were also the same person. And I tought Near was some sort of beast controlled by Mello, while L was under Raitos care (I didn't read anything about the series damnit, and I have the weirdest imagination you can think of, because Mello controlling Near is unthinkable xD and L under Raitos care?! HA! As if o.o) I tought L was just some random guy who was lost on the streets, related to the Death Note, and Raito took him home, and he transformed into Ryuk. And I didn't know what Raito used the Death Note for, I just knew he used it and had help of his friends (by friends I mean Misa, tough on this I was half right). And I tought Raito liked Misa (yeat, another impossible thing)
But those were my first toughts after I saw lots of pictures this year. Now, the first time ever I got into contact with Death Note (only saw a pixelated doll picture of Misa) was when it first came out. I tought Misa was the main character and that the story was about paranormal deaths (once again, I was half right, but at that time it didn't cross my mind that it was about a notebook. Sounds dumb? Well, it's not, I just interpreted the tittle differently. I don't know how to explain how I interpreted it, tough).
So, if you have anything to share, please do so. Even if you guessed correctly what the anime was about whee
And sorry if this is a repeat thread eek which I don't think it is because I've searched the forums.

I saw a picture of L, thought he was friggin' awesome, and waited about half a year to buy the first volume in english (I didn't know you could get it off the interwebs back then). I thought he was the main character.

Actually, the first thing I saw of Death Note was a picture of Ryuk on the manga cover and I though to myself, "Ew... who'd read that?! It looks too creepy."
xd Ironic, no? Now it's my favorite manga/anime ever.
I thought it was just one of those cliche' kinda mangas that deal with normal highschool boy who suddenly awakens a new super power and can talk to the dead and that Ryuk was either his slave or the enemy.

Woe to the man who is different who tries to break down all the barriers OH DEAR KAMI. *dies of laughter* (Not laughing at you, but just how far-fetched the idea seems) Darn you Kira. Well, at least I died relatively painlessly. Do you know what you have just inadvertedly done to us fanfiction writers? xD; That's like, more creative than the majority of DN fanfiction out there, fo' serious.
But anyways. Onto the question. My idea of Death Note was basically what [ The Twitch .Annoyance ] said, a cliché shonen manga about a down-on-his-luck kid finds out he has awesome superpowers to control shinigami like Ryuk to fight against other superpowered kids who control other shinigamis to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming the greatest shinigami person or something. Like, Bleach meets Pokemon meets Zatch Bell, only with OMGMORBIDGORE as a gimmick.
Well, gosh, was I wrong. I was browsing through the A/M/C on day when I saw a debate thread about anime-I think it was an anime reccommendation turned into debate or something-and one person whose posts I found very interesting and intelligent had said that "Death Note is a cut above the rest" or to that effect, that Death Note was something special. So trusting in that person's taste, I went to go check it out on Wikipedia, and I was amazed. Of course I was, my anime tastes back then were the ones that were EXTREMELY mainstream, like Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist (not to say that I don't love those series today, though), so it was totally the opposite of what I was used to, and plus the series was moderately popular back then when I found-not as much as it is now, but I wasn't an original reader either. The anime had come out with its first few episodes. Anyways. But when I looked, here was a geniunely deep manga. It seemed very philosophical and psychological, and had a battle of wits instead of a battle of strength or agility or power, which I really liked. Plus the characters were so unique. Even Misa, who falls into the "love-crazed fangirl" archetype, had an extra layer behind her actions. So then I watched the first episode, and as they say, the rest is history. =) Woe to the man who tries to stretch the imagination of man He shall be mocked; he shall be scourged by the blinkered guardians of morality {SONATA}

I thought Death Note was about a serial killer before I started reading it... :/ But if you think about it that is kinda right considering Light or whoever is in posession of the Death Note is using the same method over and over to go out with the killing of people... :/

[ The Twitch .Annoyance ]: xD pretty ironic alright. I also didn't have much interest on watching/reading it, until one certain day in which I was bored. And so, my obssession began whee
[~ Sonata Euphoriacide ~]: xD I told you my imagination was weird. As for the battle thingy, something like that also crossed my mind too o.o I wonder how many people tought Death Note was about random battles xP

Well, when I first started reading Death Note, I was reading it in a preview in Shonen Jump. I personally thought that the art work was awesome and the plot seemed to be interesting. So needless to say that I decided that I was going to go out and buy the manga because I wanted to see what was going to happen. Personally I thought it ended quite gay. Of course, I don't know what other people's opinions on the ending is though.

'KAY SO.
My friends were like waving the first volume and talking about detective and things like that! So I thought, 'Oh, it must be about two guys fighting who will win this case about a "suicide not" and there was this decayed corpse (RYUK). , that's about it! xD I started to look at Wiki then I realized I was close to the real summary.
