The trickling water beneath the bridge was drowned out beneath the sound of commercial traffic. Maybe, once the seasons turned half a year, the spring floods would make more of an impact on the noise pollution, but this was the end of summer. Everything felt dry. Thankfully, the humidity never seemed to settle, being this close to the ocean. Today’s weather was mild enough, a herald to the closure of summer; a jacket for the frail, a t-shirt for the rest, would suffice.

On the sidewalk, almost approximately between the industrial and business sides of the river, stood a young girl, a brown dress hanging off of bony shoulders and dark hair cascading down haphazardly cascading down her back. She clung to the metal railing that separated pedestrians from a short drop into murky water, her knuckles white from the pressure, and simply stared down at the river swooshing beneath her feet. Her entire face was contorted in one giant picture of unhappiness. But she was too proud to cry.

She was absolutely lost and quite out of breath. Even now, ten-fifteen minutes after arriving upon this bridge, her chest beat rapidly, her pulse pounding in her ears. “I’m sorry Marie,” she whimpered, gazing down into the water and hoping whole heartedly that her guardian would materialize. But dreams like that didn’t come true for nasty runaways like herself, she had already concluded.

Adele was wondering. The city was vast and always held new things for the tiny girl to see and explore, pulse she enjoyed the attention people showered her with when she was out adventuring alone. Today it was the bridge.

Bridges had always fascinated Adele. Well, not so much the bridge, but the water runner under it which held her interest. All that water, moving so fast, and no one knew where it was going. Rivers were really mesmerizing, because you could never step into the same river water twice.

A noise drew her attention away from the glittering, rushing water and to a person standing further down the metal and concrete structure. A pretty girl stood, also watching the water, but, unlike Adele who was enthralled by the rushing movement, this girl looked very unhappy to be there.

Adele moved closer to the other child who was still young, but older than herself. Wondering the matter could be, so approached the other girl, her most charming smile in place.

Her hands were tired from hanging on to the bridge's railing; they were really sore. She loosened her grasp, her skin twitching gratefully, despite the red marks engraved into her palms. Immediately, she regretted her decision, the absence of the aching pain and the concentration needed to maintain it opened her mind to a flood of new thoughts, over the fresh memories.

She wished that she could suppress her own memory, and then regretted that too. She was sinking in guilt. "I shouldn't of left," she murmured aloud to no one but the air, finally having caught her breath enough to talk, and redoubled her efforts to focus her awareness on just the water.

Of the approaching girl, she took no notice, being absorbed in her own problems. Selfish, but children often are without meaning to malicious.

Adele wondered what the matter was. The other girl looked sad, and in pain, maybe she was lost, or maybe alone. Being lost and alone always served to make Adele sad. She approached the other child with reckless abandon; the lesson about not talking to strangers had never really sunk in with her. Standing on tiptoes so she could reach the girl’s shoulder, she tapped her gently.

“Are you lost?” She asked, her voice filled with childish worry.

She jumped in shock, in reaction to Adele's touch. In a violent motion, she spun on her heel so that she faced whomever touched her, prepared for the worst. That was a lesson that Mar... her guardian had taught her because of their neighborhood. Her adolescent body felt completely tensed, and then shock began to settle in as she stared down at the adorable child in front of her.

"No," she retorted brashly, speaking without thinking. Then, she blushed. Her logic ran confusedly through her mind, but the eventual end product was that she felt that it might be easier to tell this child, who looked to be close to her age, than to speak with an adult, of at least that part of her miseries. "Yes," she added in a gentler tone. "I guess I am."
