I am not your doctor so I don't know your specific case. But from my personal experience, as well as from what my doctors have said, pregnancy weight gain and what is good or bad really depends on your body type, your family history, and how big the baby is. 20 lbs is really good in general. But if you are really petite that may seem like alot more weight on you than on other women. You need to evaluate if the weight is just in your abdominal area or throughout your body and this will give you a better idea of if the weight is just the baby or due to your diet. As long as you do not have gestational diabetes or any other health issues related to excess weight and didn't put all 20lbs on in one week you are most likely fine. Continue to eat healthy and try to avoid sugary stuff or junk food and you should be good. At 35 weeks though this should just mean continue your normal eating routine.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy. I hope you have an easy delivery!

I agree with electricdecember in that I'm not your doctor and don't know the specifics of your pregnancy, but with my first pregnancy I put on like 40 pounds over the course of the pregnancy. My doctor was a little concerned, but I had a healthy pregnancy and my doctor was shocked that I was nearly back to my pre-pregnancy weight at my 6 week post-partum checkup.
With my second pregnancy I put on a fair amount of weight as well (though I don't recall how much). This time around though I just haven't been able to lose the weight.

I've heard that 20 lbs is really good weight gain. I gained 56 lbs when I was pregnant 50 of those before my 9th month. However, I had gestational diabeties, high blood pressure, and alot of water weight gain. I had to be induced early because of all of those factors.

However, because most of the weight gain was swelling and from my high blood pressure I lost 39 of those lbs by 2 1/2 weeks after birth.

I think it all depends on the body type you had before you where pregnant and what kinds of situations you are in, and what pregnancy is doing to your body. I think your doing good and that you don't have to worry so much about gaining anymore. To little weight gain isn't good either.

that's really good! so many have trouble getting rid of the pregnancy weight afterwards. I crunched the numbers from the "What to Expect..." book and I gained what I wanted: 75 pounds. (I had full term twins) I was paranoid/careful because I live in a small town and if the babies had been smaller than the 6 and 7 lbs they were, they would have been air-lifted away from me. I'm a**l-retentive about nursing so I would have been POed to be away from my boyz. and yeah, nursing twins i lost all of the water weight in 5 days. I freaked out how small and thin my thighs looked. heck, with those big boyz, i had forgotten i had thighs! rofl

I hate the pregnancy weight game. If you feel healthy and you don't have any problems with blood pressure or diabities, then tell your doctor to shove his foot up his bum. Don't try to gain weight, but deffinitly do not go on any sort of diet. Just eat when you're hungry and do what you're comfortable with, I've gained a bit over the 35 mark so far and I still feel fine, and I didn't get any of the bad pregnancy problems. You are supposed to gain 25-35 pounds in pregnancy, but if you go over it's no big deal. If you gain under however, your baby could end up with problems including low birth weight.

I think the amount of weight you are meant to gain is based on your pre-pregnancy weight. Me, for example... I'm considered heavy set. Before I got pregnant, I weighed 260lb on the nose (I'm very tall though, so it evens out. Healthy as a horse, regardless of people saying that is a "fat" weight. I bet my cholesterol is better than yours, too.). When I was first pregnant, I didn't have morning sickness, but I didn't have any kind of appetite either, and I lost ten pounds. When I delivered at 38 weeks, I weighed 272lb. Though really, I only gained 12lb, but if you consider the fact that I did lose some weight right at the start, I gained 22lb.

Either way, after I delivered, I weighed 255lb, so I lost 17lb when she was born, but 6.5lb of that was Cambria, then water and placenta. I read this in a book... Did you know by your 9th month, you've gained 4lb in blood going through the umbilical cord? I thought that was interesting.

Anywho, from what I've read, thinner people tend to gain more, while heavier people gain less. Now, I don't know what type of size you are, but you may have to consider the fact that your OBGYN may just be an idiot. So many doctors are these days, I'm afraid. Regardless of pre-pregnancy weight, I think 20lb is pretty good for either end of the scale.

I also just realized this post is over a year old, but maybe this will still be helpful information to someone. :p
