Although she was right there beside him, comforting him and letting him lean against her, he felt like she was a hundred miles away. He had never felt quite so alone in his entire life, even with her so close to him. It was hard to open up your heart to the one who owned it and then realize that they didn’t feel quite the same way. At least, she hadn’t shown him anything to make him think she did. He was just her friend, a friend that was falling head over heels. The mass of thoughts running through his head kind of put a damper on things and made him feel very heavy hearted. He wasn't sure what he was doing here anymore, talking to her about something that must have seemed so shocking. Of course, this new revelation didn't help his mood in the slightest.
“I feel more alone than I ever had,” he said with a small frown, beginning to shift uncomfortably where he lay. He needed to walk, to think, to be alone. He wanted to be out in the world, just him and nature and no words to tangle up his confused little mind and pierce his raw heart. He had to get away from her – she was just a constant reminder of his hopeless cause. Every moment around her reminded him that she was not indeed his, that she probably would never be. “I think that maybe I should go, Ihlo,” he said quietly, staring down at his paws, “I’ve embarrassed myself enough today.” He wasn't sure that he could stand this much longer, being with her without really being with her. His poor little mind was in quite a jumble.

Ihlo was oblivious to the fact her abilities to reciprocate his feelings had failed so miserably. She must have just not said the right words or something, but she had hoped that being next to him, by reassuring him, would have been enough to comfort him and to confirm to him how she felt.
Obviously not.
"Uuuhh...embarrassed..how?" she looked at him confused and baffled. "I thought...you liked me...and you know I like you the same way..."

He frowned at her slowly, confusion written clearly in his eyes. Well, he obviously hadn’t picked up on the way she was trying to tell him back. He had just come right out and say it, but being female, she must have tied it into her words somehow. They did that, right? He frowned and tilted his head, tail flickering slowly behind him. He hoped he hadn’t just upset her by not being able to read what she meant her words, after all, Njozi could be very slow sometimes.
“Oh,” he said quietly, a weak smile beginning to spread across his pretty mug, leaning his head into nuzzle against her softly. “I suppose I’m just too slow to realize what you meant, Ihlo, I’m sorry.” He laughed at his own mistake, embarrassed now more than he was before, but able to smile about it this time.
“I do feel that way, I do,” he whispered, suddenly feeling a whole lot better than he had a few moments ago. It was like a weight lifting off of his heart, off of his shoulders, letting him breath. This was more than he had hoped for, and he simply felt like pieces of his mind were slowly twining themselves back together. He felt, for the first time in days, like he could possibly be at peace with himself. “Forgive my slowness, Ihlo.”

Ihlo wore the most peculiar expression on her face, a mixture of 'what just happened' and uncontrollable giggles. She wasn't laughing at Njozi, heavens no, it was what had just happened - they'd both said something that got lost in translation! It was certainly something that tickled Ihlo pink, literally as she broke out in a blush.
"Its nothing to forgive...its quite endearing actually," she smiled at him happily.
Her mind couldn't say much else for now, she was just so happy to see Njozi smile and feel better, and by that, she felt so much better in herself. She loved the fact she had made him smile. She had made him smile.
And that was important to her.

Njozi smiled softly as he shifted his body closer to hers, reveling in the warmth that now added to the sudden sleepiness overwhelming his mind. Having finally gotten all of that off of his chest, finally able to express the feelings he thought would surely overwhelm every part of him. He wasn’t sure how much longer of that horrible feeling of restlessness he could have taken. It was finally over and he couldn’t believe how much better everything felt.
“Will you stay with me while I sleep?” he asked quietly as a large yawn cracked his jaws. Slowly, he lowered his head down onto his paws, his eyelids heavy, although he stared up at her despite it. He thought he could finally get to sleep, after days of fitful dreams, and he knew he’d sleep all the better just having her beside him.

Ihlo had tried that once, but admittedly, she'd been a bad guard. This time though, she'd know what to do.
"Of course," she said softly, and gave him a nuzzle before he laid down to sleep. And she sat there, watching him and making sure his dreams were as pleasant and restful as this patch of heaven.
Their patch of heaven.
