I saw this - or rather, heard this - earlier today, and simply have to post it here. I also intend this thread to perhaps be a thread to discuss other "TV TXT TLK" incidents, if I'm lucky.
Now, I'm 20-years-old, so laugh if you will...But I was browsing YouTube for some English clips from "Pokemon Chronicles", and came across one that made my blood freeze in my veins.
I don't know if anyone here has seen the particular special, and I myself am unsure of the dub title, but it happens to be the dubbed version of "Raikou! Legend Of Thunder!". During the scene in which Jimmy (Kenta) spies Marina (who keeps her name) chatting with Vincent (Jun'ichi) over the video phone, Marina spots him hovering in the doorway. After she alerts Vincent she's about to hang up, he protests, and Marina replies by saying "GTG!". I don't know if this is a one-time occurance, or if she does this throughout the special, but I feel once is enough.
Now, as I said, I'm 20-years-old. I'm sure I'm not the average Pokemon fan's age, so what I'm seeing here is that this is what Pokemon USA is subjecting our youth to. Not only is Marina powerful as far as the show is concerned - and thus she has many fans - but they also go so far as to peg her through her own conversation with Jimmy as having been mistaken for an actress, rockstar, and model. Does this not imply that physically speaking TXT TLK is actually desireable, or otherwise noteworthy?
I full and well understand that Pokemon's fanbase is considerably smaller than it was a few years ago, but even if one kid were to see this - a young, influential child who even has one friend and is even semi-active online - isn't it going a little too far to promote TXT TLK not only through commercials that at least have some kind of basis on texting, but through a popular children's anime?
Bottom line is, what are your thoughts, and has anyone else perhaps seen TXT TLK used in television? I'm hoping not, but I have a sinking suspicion...

Well, Cingular has gone nuts with their text mesaging advertisments. And TV shows are bound to use it as it becomes exponentially popular.

That's exactly what I mean. How much farther will they take it? Will it take some grammar nazi punching a hole in their TV, or will that even stop them?
Granted, watching television isn't the most educational thing to do 98% of the time, but really...Do they have to dumb it down anymore? I'm hoping, sincerely, that no one will ever see anything like this anywhere else.

I was wondering when someone was going to talk about the Cingular commercials. I really haven't seen much 'txt tlk' in TV in general though.

Actually, I have. I have a fair amount of exposure to all those text-talk commercials.
It's everywhere, and like my sister said, it ain't letting up anytime soon.

I don't have anything against Pokemon but I think I might now. Television has been pissing me off lately with all the text talking crap. It's so stupid and it's brainwashing the ones who have no role model to tell them otherwise.

I seriously feel for the poor children who are exposed to this kind of grammar-slaughtering programming day by day.
Now not only do we have the Cingular commercials, but now I've seen another commercial just recently involving a little boy and his security blanket I suppose you could call it, at the end of which they refer to the boy and his blanket as "b.f.f.".
BAH! How heinous a crime! Now leeching its way into the soft, spongy minds of impressionable TODDLERS!

Oh for the love of- my gosh, there's actually "TXT TLK"...on pokemon?! I feel like a part of my world just died. Personally, I love the whole pokemon fanbase (yes I'm a retard on many levels xp ) but that's just a bit past surprising. I haven't watched that one in English but I would like to point out that the Japanese has a line "は う" (more like sound effect) and it's a condensed form of an exclamation that might be considered Japanese text talk? I'm not entirely sure but it's an interesting idea.
