" . . . the single assumption which makes our existence viable -- that somebody is watching . . ."

-- Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

People tend to think of Fae as lovely creatures of almost unearthly beauty and grace. This image epitomizes the Fae of the Seelie Court. Many artists and bards, both Fae and other, have striven to capture the beauty of the Seelie Court. Most have gone mad; none have truly succeeded. Pure manifestations of nature and beauty, the members of the Seelie Court view themselves as the pinnacle of perfection. This elitist attitude restricts status in the court to only pure-blood fey. A court Fae can trace his or her lineage back several millennia, showing nothing but true Fae.

Fae high society and the Fae realms, be they on the Plane of Faerie or Fae high-society enclaves on the Material Plane, contain the only creatures whose opinions matter. Politics thrive in this elitist environment. Seelie Fae form cliques and fictionalize amongst themselves. In the endlessly politicking and gossiping world of the Seelie Court, status can be won by hosting guests (willing or unwilling) or attracting followers with great skill in a craft or performance art.

Seelie Court Fae occasionally tolerate the company of beautiful or gifted creatures, preferring those of Fae, Elven, or Celestial blood. These "court friends" may provide companionship and amusements, but only those with pure lineage may hold positions of importance.

Admittance to the Seelie Court for outsiders is extremely rare, even more so if the outsiders are not of pure Fae blood. Upon entrance to the court, visitors must be prepared with valuable and unusual gifts for the King of Light, or they might find themselves lost in an endless hedge maze. Suitable gifts for the King include figurines of wondrous power, gems of brightness, and magical jewelry.

The physical appearance of the Seelie Court mirrors nature, to which the Fae are intrinsically linked. White ash trees, strong and stately, with their branches intertwining to create a living ceiling, line the throne hall like marble columns. Gossamer streamers of iridescent blues, pinks and purples wind their way through the boughs. Phosphorescent flowers gleam like lanterns amidst the treetops. Semi-precious jewels of amethysts, tiger's eyes and topaz decorate flowers that float down the waterways lining the path to the throne. Statues carved of gold and adorned with gems further attest to the wealth and beauty of the current ruler, as each ruler must display more splendor than the previous one or risk the gossip and scorn of their subjects. The throne itself, and one who sits on it, are the focal points of the room. The throne of the Seelie Court is shaped like a large ice dragon, as brilliantly cold and glittery as the Fae nobility.

The Seelie Court Fae find the UnSeelie Court Fae absolutely repellent.

Both the Queen of Air and Darkness and the King of Light, hold court from ornately carved, dragon-shaped thrones. Commonly thought to be magical, the thrones' abilities are a matter of much speculation among the Courts. None but the nobles know the truth.

Both courts are matriarchal monarchies. Sometimes males endeavor to take the throne, but none have survived the Rites of Succession. Each prospective ruler undergoes a lengthy rite of passage. Not every candidate survives these secret tests and rituals. The heir undertakes the trial when the former queen dies or expresses a willingness to abdicate her throne. In the final Rite of Succession, the aspiring ruler ascends to sit on the throne. Sometimes a candidate dies at this point, rejected in some fashion by the throne. If the prospective ruler lives through this final ceremony, the court acknowledges them as its rightful ruler.

The Throne is in fact the rulers last line of defense, a magical body guard that lingers within the throne room lovingly bearing witness to the chosen monarchs activities.

Children are a precious thing to the Sidhe, and are rarer than human children, especially amongst the Royals. Even fertile couples have to try quite a while to conceive, and sometimes never do. Anything, regardless of species, that can breed is worth keeping alive. The possibility of a child, or a fertile pair, can keep a Sidhe alive even if they have angered the King or Queen of their court.

For this reason Sidhe do not marry for love. Only fertile couples marry, regardless of their feelings for one another. Many couples have been trapped in marriage after one night of passion. A Fae version of divorce can be granted, but only if both parties agree. For the lesser Fae or lesser Sidhe, marriage is an opportunity, a way of becoming apart of a Court. Their husband has to treat them like wife or not touch them at all. Marriage by force is not recognized by Sidhe. Adultery is considered a crime, and those in a marriage may not seek pleasure else where - even the King or Queen must abide by this rule.

All Fae gain comfort from touch and sex between friends for comfort is not unusual. Casual sex, rough sex and Dominance & submission is frowned upon in the Seelie Court, but is very common in the UnSeelie Court. Sex with humans is illegal if the human is under 18 years of age, and if the Sidhe does not protect the humans mind. Otherwise they become elf-struck, and obsessed with the feel of Sidhe flesh.

Duels & Fighting

Anyone can challenge another to a duel. Only the King or Queen can refuse to let a duel take place, usually to protect themselves or their children. The Royals are too precious to risk being lost in a duel. It is also unwise to risk displeasing the ruler by challenging their child, because you never knew how they would react if you killed their child. The challenged Fae gets to choose to method of fighting, whether it be magic, by a weapon or physical combat. See here for the full ritual details for a duel.

Using magic to best someone in a fight is considering cheating, less than chivalrous and makes the Sidhe look weak.

Weapons of Power

Many of the older Sidhe have weapons of power, magical items that have certain abilities. There are also relics and items of power amongst the Sidhe as well, that do the same thing.

Lying

Sidhe do not lie. They bend the truth, they avoid saying the truth or they use pretty words to cover the truth. They never outright lie, they just omit the truth. To lie is to be fore sworn and the punishment is banishment from faerie. Despite their nature, the Seelie Court and it's illusions are more likely to deceive than the UnSeelie Court. The UnSeelie Court is more truthful and honest, not trying to pretend to be something it is not.

Power

To be named 'Lord/Lady of' something meant that he/she has power over it i.e. Lord of the Dead has power over the dead. Many Sidhe who lost their power changed their names, no longer going by their name when they were gods or in full power.

Other bits & pieces

Sidhe do not keep track of time. They are so old that birthdays mean nothing to them and they only have a vague idea of their age, usually due to events in the past. They cannot remember their birth dates.

Blood is a precious fluid for the Fae and not to be wasted. It can be used to make alliances, especially in the UnSeelie Court.

Sidhe do have a type of religion, despite being worshiped as gods once. They believe in the Goddess (the giver of life) and the Consort (everything that is male).

To be seen crying out due to pain is a weakness among the Sidhe.
