So I have been thinking about getting into magick/magic however you choose to spell it. The only thing is I don't have the slightest clue where to start learning, what to practice, what to read, anything. I don't even know any of the types of magic, so it's really like a brand new clean slate ready to be filled right up. I just want some input from the users of the guild on what you guys used to start magick, or maybe some of you can give me some info on magick yourself. Anything helps. domokun

I could help you a bit, I guess. First and foremost, magick is about what /you/ want to do, what /you/ think is the best plan of action, and how far /you/ want to take it., so everyone's opinions are different, and I'd only be teaching you what I believe about magick, and offering you a couple of other places to look in order to find your own, personal path. That said, if you want me to, I could write you up a thread on magick... I think I could do seperate posts for theories and philosophies of magick, different magickal techniques (sigils, invocation, evocation etc), and the like? It'd take me a week to finish fully, but I can post one topic at a time, then you can read it, ask questions and try some stuff until the next topic gets posted. Sound koo enough?
I'm more of an eclectic/freestyle magickian more than anything else, so I won't be suggesting you to read the likes of Agrippa, Crowley or the rest of them, because archaic, hard-to-read stuff is /not/ my forte, and since magick is about having fun and getting results rather than being bored shitless and getting results, I won't tell you to read them unless your natural curiosity leads you that way.

Sounds pretty cool. A big problem I seem to have is not really understanding magick. Some of the sites i've looked at jump right in how to do things, not explaining at all what the hell it is. Like this one site 'realmagick.tripod.com', just told me elements, some books to read and jumped right into name vibrations or something, didn't tell me why you do it, or anything, just how to.
But yeah, I have a couple books on magick myself, one of them is horribly hard to read because it was written in the 1800s or something. Blabs on about God and stuff, im not too interested in praying or talking to gods and stuff. But freestyle sounds kind of fun, I would like to hear your beliefs on magick as well as anything else.

Magick is whatever you think is what magick is. It could be a natural law of the universe that we just don't understand, it could be a lost ability of the pineal gland, it could be a butterfly effect between the electricity in your brain and the probabilities of the universe, it could be God doing s**t for you -- whatever theory you think is right is, for all intents and purposes, right. You'll probably not be able to prove it to anyone but yourself, but that doesn't matter, because your magick is yours; the fact that so many explanations exist is because you can't pin it down to any one explanation. In any case, I'll get right on that thread.

In any case, I'll get right on that thread. I like the scientific theories. like... the ones that say psi is blah and blah. they say high amounts of iron help concentrate the energy because it's acaused by the brain and whatnot. The biggest mostest importantest thing I can tell you is not to get carried away. This is reality, and you're not a god. Many peopel think they control the universe because they can move a psiwheel... and it gets out of hand... Like Sam with his angel theories. He finally admitted he was lying, but he truly beleived himself for a long time.

Book 4, followed by "Magick in Theory and Practice" by Crowley... 'cause (outdated, maybe?) archaic, hard-to-read stuff is sexy.
Or you can go with "The Golden Dawn" as revealed by Israel Regardie, 6th edition.
I believe in ceremony and ritual.
NOTE: my suggestions will require you to be inclined to learn languages... mainly Enochian and hebrew... as both rely on the Keys and Calls of enochian, and both use the Qaballah.
Or you can pick up the satanic bible by LaVey, and work through what he wrote... will require just as much equipment, but less meditation.
final words: Find something that will work for you. What you want to do, how you want to do it. Certain "groups" will go with lunar/planetary correspondences (heavily time dependant) whereas others won't (time-independant). I would suggest looking at what LoBo has and what Mitsh has to offer. Decide which you think fits you best, and go with it. If at any point what they tell you doesn't work, then drop the specific "piece" and find a suitable "replacement model" that will work.
Enjoy.
