Taabu had made completely sure that the rumors of Nyekundu’s death had been true before he left the pridelands. Although he had never spent a lot of time with his grandfather, he still knew him well enough from the days he had stayed in the Pridelands after running away from home. So when he found out that Nyekundu had killed Mufasa, it was nearly all Syeira could do to keep him from running off to find him and kill him himself. Of course, that was just a bit of brash thinking, and Syeira finally convinced him otherwise. Although, he hadn’t been at rest with it until he found out the b*****d had died.

“I’m positive, Nyunya,” he said quietly, staring into her eyes, first looking into one and then the other. “When mother and I went to the pridelands, we found out that the pride was under the reign of my aunt and that my grandfather had been killed by Nyekundu,” he began slowly, frowning lightly with furrowed brows as he went on, “And I made sure that he was dead, I made sure that all the rumors were true before I left.” He shrugged softly, sitting down in front of the log and leaning his head softly against her. “He won’t be bothering anyone ever again, I promise.”

“Maybe you should just start by telling them about your mother?” he said, raising his eyes to glance up at her some. “Start telling them about how weak she was the last time you saw her, and about the cubs that she had and needed someone to take care of,” he said quietly, “make it a story and make sure that they feel sorry for your mom, their mom, and for the cubs? Then.. tell them that they were those cubs, and that you took them in to save them from the rogue life your mother was so weak from.” Of course, he didn’t know if that was how Nyunya would want to do it – Taabu just liked stories, so he figured the girls would too.

Nyunya's eyes widened in pure horror. She had heard that Mufasa had sadly been killed, and she regretted not being able to see him again, because he had been a kind and polite old lion. To her, at least. Their meeting had been brief, but she had liked him very much. To know that her father had been the one to kill him made her feel physically ill. She had been so relieved when she heard Nyek was dead, and now this. She didn't even want to wonder what was going through Taabu's mind, knowing she was his daughter. She had to... move. She needed space. She needed to not look at anyone right now.

She slowly pulled back from Taabu, shaking her head slowly as though she could deny that Nyekundu took Mufasa's life, backing away along the log until she could turn around and hop off of it, walking slowly through the grass, her steps heavy and leaden. Her head was bowed toward the ground and her eyes were closed tight, so that she wasn't paying attention to where she walked. She kept moving, though, until she felt she had enough space around her (no more than four feet) and then she came to a slow stop, standing stock still with an expression somewhere between forlorn and angry as her head pointed toward the ground. She let out one shaky breath and then spoke, her voice barely carrying over the distance between them.

"I had no idea... I'd heard Mufasa had died... that he'd been killed... but I never knew who by. I'm so sorry, Taabu, that you had to lose your grandfather to such a monster like Nyekundu."

Taabu frowned as she moved back away from him and her eyes followed her as she trotted carefully down the log and leapt off. He sighed, pulling back away from the log and settling on the ground to sit instead. He hadn’t meant to upset her with the news, but he figured she should know, considering how interconnected to both sides she was. He simply sighed and watched her as she paced out into the grass, trying to decide what he should say, what he could do. He probably shouldn’t have said anything about it, she hated her heritage enough as it was.

“What do you mean? Nyunya, your mother was hurt by the same monster, I have no idea how it must feel to hate half of your heritage. I can only think that you must feel almost nearly the same thing, perhaps you feel it worse, after all I knew my grandfather but not well, and - ” he stopped. This wasn’t going to help anything, or make her feel better, and he knew that he would have to console her some other way.

He pushed himself to his feet and forced himself to walk towards her. Standing, the difference between their bodies was even more obvious, and he towered over her as he got near. He leaned down, forcing her to look into his eyes. “This doesn’t change anything, Nyunya. I don’t see him in you, I see nothing of him in you, and I will never see anything of him in you. Sure, you have a temper, but honest to god Nyunya, have you met my mother? I mean, really, he has contributed nothing to you but blood. There are too many of you and your sisters for anyone to hold anything against any of you. You’re more a victim than anything in these situations.” He sighed, shaking his head, glancing away before back to her, “I can’t say I wish he had been stopped long ago, for I would have never found the other half of my soul, but I can feel pity for those he harmed. Nyunya, you have to move past this, like I have.”

Nyunya let her eyes close as she listened to Taabu speak. She didn't know how he managed it, but he always seemed to know exactly what to say to make her feel a bit better. Or perhaps she simply loved and trusted him enough that she accepted whatever he said without question. Whatever it was, she was grateful for it now. Managing a tiny smile, she moved closer to press her face into the warmth of his mane just under his chin, breathing deep of his scent, letting it fill her mind and block out all else for a few precious moments.

"Taabu..." she murmured softly. "Thank you. I'll try to let it go... but it's hard. I was always worried he might show up one day. He told me he'd come for me when I was older." She sighs quietly, slowly nuzzling into his fur. "That's why I left the Umande'mfuni lands originally. He knew where I lived and I thought he'd show up one day to take me away. And I thought he might have taken any of the kids away as well, if he ever found me again."

She shuddered at the thought. Yeah, it had always played on her mind, this hidden fear. She hadn't wanted any of her darlings to get mixed up with Nyekundu. It was bad enough that they shared blood with him through her; she wouldn't have been able to stand it if any of them had turned out to be anything like him. It was another reason why she'd had no choice but to take in her half-sisters. It was the only way to guarantee they grew in a warm and loving family environment. Without that, who knew what they would have become.

Taabu simply smiled at her, looking down at her calmly, that undying affection for his beloved mate lingering in the depths of those crimson eyes. She really was a good mother, a wonderful mate, always concerned about her family above anything else. If he had known that so long ago when his only concern was bothering and upsetting her, if he had known what love he would come to find in her, he couldn’t help thinking that perhaps he would have been a little nicer to her. Although, he really was just an annoyingly confident youth – he wasn’t sure he could have changed himself if he tried. Everything that they were now, everything that the pair of them had become, it was all due to the growth they had had together. She made him who he was now, and for that he was thankful. The only thing he could do to repay her was protect her and shelter her – chase away her fears.

“He won’t be coming for you or anyone else ever again, my love,” he whispered, nuzzling his cheek against her own softly. Then he simply smiled, leaping calmly over the log and glancing back towards her. “Come on, love, you need to sleep,” he whispered softly, tail flickering as he took another step towards the den, “and you know what a fit those cubs will make if they wake up and find us both gone.” Then he simply smiled, disappearing into the den.

Nyunya felt warm with Taabu looking at her like that, like nothing in the world could ever bring a chill into her life again. For all he did for her, she owed him so much. Especially for being there for her all this time. Even when he had been away, though it had hurt her not to have him by her side, knowing that he loved her, and that he would return to her one day, kept her going strong. If she hadn't trusted those words as much as she had, she would never have survived their long separation.

And yet again, he was taking care of her. It was true she needed sleep. With all the worries and longings on her mind, she had rarely managed to get a full night's sleep. She had a sneaking suspicion he realised that, as well. But Nyunya could not argue, not even playfully, when he spoke such good sense. She nodded as she followed behind him. "I don't think I could handle any more drama."

She slipped into the den after Taabu, ready to settle down for some real sleep.
