Anyone ever teach a guard, or help teach one? Like instructor, teaching/writing drill, or teaching basics? Story time! Any particularly difficult things to teach? Favortie thing? Difficult people?

I'm not an instructor, but I did help teach the guard at my high school at band camp this year. 4 guard had graduated (including me, the captains, and another girl), the the guard was almost entirely new -- 2 vets, and 12 girls who had never spun before. The captains stayed on as instructors, and I was hanging around before coming to college. I was teaching basics to individuals who where having trouble the first two days, then I taught drill (even though I was actually learning it with them! lol). I did the routine w/ them so they had someone to follow if they got lost (this was when the instructors wanted to watch and the new captains were nowhere to be found). I just LOVE it when you teach them something, and they get it! It goes from messy to gorgeous~ heart lolz.

There was one girl who was impossible to teach though....she had already been kicked from the clarinets and the drumline, so I'm not quite sure why she's still there at all.....but we'd teach something, and she'd fall behind. Normally, that isn't bad -- we had at one point 6 older girls available to teach, and one of us was always working with her. But the thing is, nothing seemed to sink in. We'd eventually get her to vaguely do what was taught, but by then the other girls were like 3 or 4 moves ahead. Little things we asked her to correct, she would do wrong every time. If she dropped the flag, she'd look around and laugh while I stood there waiting for her to pick it up and try again. Ugh. I think we all pretty much gave up on her.....by the time we started to clean drill, we didn't run over to correct her anymore.

I've also written parts of our routines -- mainly the ending for the parade version of our 2006 season show and a small chunk for a tune we never got the chance to perform to. I also wrote a 32-count solo for college guard before I had to quit. If it fits with the music, it will be expanded and used in my high school's routine! xd It will be so much fun if they do use it! I can show them my original (without modifications and at the speed I wrote it at), plus I can be proud every time that segment is performed. heart

Overall tho, I think I rather liked teaching guard. Most likely I'll be doing the same thing/helping out at hs band camp next year too, lol.

Once I had to teach a bunch of fish how to do a pitch toss. They couldn't understand the idea of releasing behind the head. It was kind off funny seeing them drop it and duck beneath the flag and I laughed so hard when I left practice. That was earlier this season though and I am happy to say they all have amazing pitch tosses now.

I am currently the captain of my colorguard which happens to be student run (we have had 2 coaches while i've been on guard, very briefly, and both were miserable failures and pretty much ditched us). We will have 8 girls and 2 guys for our winterguard show and we are doing so well for a student run guard. When i joined my freshman year, the guard was pretty much a failure. But being so in love with the idea of guard i researched my butt off and taught myself things we hadn't learned (including how to do more than just basic rifle) and thats what got me captain my junior year...Although it's been a never ending search for a coach who isnt a flake.

I have emence respect for anyone who can not only do the stunts that good guards do, but can teach others how to do it, and do it good enough that they can preform it. i however, coudn't spin a flag to save my life. (Is on the drumline, but felt like giving props to good guardies+ coaches/teachers)

Sounds like our guard. We have one girl who wanted to be on drumline, yet for some odd reason ended up in guard. She never wanted to be there, and every time someone would try to correct her, she'd throw a temper tantrum. She always said she hated it, but for some odd reason she joined winterguard.

Anyways, I am helping teach basics during my free period to a few friends of mine who are doing guard for the first time next semester, and another who is joining next year during field season. Kind of funny how I am two or three years younger than both of them.

For Winterguard, out of 14 of us there were only two newbies. Both were freshman, so I helped going over basics with them, and still am. For marching band season, the seniors are second-in-command to the instructor, so I can't wait for next year!

In my Guard, the vets have to teach potential freshman during the off-season. Then Mike, our instructor, runs through everything. But we're responsible for the basic teaching. Then Mike will teach a couple of random tosses and a small routine. After try-outs the vets aren't teaching, but we're still expected to help anyone who needs it.

I personally have contributed a small amount to the work for last year's show and this year's Winterguard. But that's it.

I have also taught my middle school's color guard for the last two years. it's fun, but it can be irritating. We never seem to have enough time, not even enough to properly teach basics in. Kinda sucks. That, and the middle school doesn't do try-outs, so it's anyone who wants to. Which means you get a lot of dead weights. Beh...
