I was thinking: our Language Questions sticky is kind of a mess.

So many people just post their questions in new topics, and so many people waste time telling them to put them in the Language Questions sticky.
Yet few go to the Language Questions sticky to answer questions, most just go to pile up the questions, and a bunch of them aren't even seen, let alone answered.

Traffic in the actual subforum itself is reasonable enough, perhaps we could filter the bigger, more extensive questions simply into the forum?

I don't know what the moderators of this guild have experienced in the past without the sticky, but I do know that I feel there is a problem with the current system. Above is a solution I give so that I'm not just whining, though it's not the only solution, which is to the guild moderators' discretion based on the problems that gave birth to the sticky in the first place.

Please don't yell at me, make snide remarks, etc, which I sadly worry will happen for posting this.
I'm just tired of seeing several people waste time making posts to tell someone they're in the wrong place (and I don't see enough traffic through the sticky to be under the impression that all the people redirected to the sticky ever really post questions often again), and tired of having my questions ignored.

I know you posted this a while ago, but I agree with what you're saying. The purpose of the Language sticky was to avoid a bunch of "How do you say peach in Japanese?", "How do you say cat in Japanese?" threads, but then no one reads through the sticky, and some questions are lost, while other are asked multiple times.

Maybe within the learning Japanese subforum, we can just add another subforum that a "ask any question" forum. If the question is simple "what is cat in japanese" it can be answered, and we can move on. If it's a larger topic, like te-form, or i and na-adjectives, maybe they can eventually be stickied? Is that what you're thinking?

This seems like a good idea. smile

But, based on my own personal observations, a forum that contain stickies (or too many of it) reduces the amount of activity for that forum. For instance, suppose there's a question that a person has but realizes it's already on a stickied topic, so that person might not feel compelled as much to ask his/her question. Thus, no post was made. Now suppose there are ten people with the same question, but only two still remained unsure, so they go ahead and submit their posts. Yes, two people have posted, but eight have declined to do this. And you can see how this exponentially grows. Next thing you know, the forum appears to be dead with only a few post submissions that pop up every now and then.

I'm not insinuating that this guild is dead or anything, but it is just something that I've noticed on all community forums that I go to (not just GaiaOnline).

Sorry for the long post, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that certain topics should be stickied, but I think for it's okay if people tend to repeat questions. It just goes to show that there is still some activity going on, and frankly, I'd rather have this than a quiet board. sweatdrop
