OK, there is the 17th Karmapa, Trinlay Thaye Dorje, of the Karma Kagyu sect who is now touring Europe. The Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism contains such sages as Milarepa, Marpa, Tilopa, Naropa, and Gampopa in its line of transmission; the Karmapa is recognized as an emanation of Avalokitesvara/Chenrezig Bodhisattva and the teachings of the lineage are ultimately traced to Vajradhara Buddha by way of Tilopa.

For more information, there's the websites http://www.karmapa.org/index.htm and http://www.karma-kagyu.org/

I'll get back to you all with more details concerning the current Karmapa's place of residence and life history ASAP.

Thankfully, the 17th Karmapa's tale is found here:
http://www.karma-kagyu.org/17-gk/press-rel/reco/reco5.htm

It appears that he and his family lived in Tibet between 1983 and 1993 or 1994, thereafter leaving for Nepal before settling in India due to persecution in Tibet.

The present Karmapa, or rather one of them (there are two, and they're in dispute) is quite young. In his 20's. He even has a MySpace page. So with any luck it'll be, like, eighty years before he passes away. Eighty years should be plenty of time to get this Registration for Reincarnation nonsense done away with.

Yeah, I suspect the Karmapa-in-dispute is one advocated by the 'turncoat' monk mentioned on one of the websites (likely with Chinese government pressure).

Thankfully it appears that the young, 'official' Karmapa (Trinlay) already has plenty of experience under his belt (lol sash?) and is reaching out to the West much as the Dalai Lama has. I expect that a lot of good will come from his efforts in the decades ahead biggrin

Wow. How can the Chinese government expect anyone to take them seriously after this?

I have a hard time imagining that Chinese government officials actually take themselves seriously...they're as ridiculous as my avatar!

I've recently looked more into the Karmapa controversy, and it appears that the alternate Karmapa is generally considered to be the official one. In any case, his nomination had the support of the Dalai Lama, several Kagyu officials, and Chinese government backing (though he fled Tibet in 2000 and now resides in Dharmasala). I'll get back to y'all on the story...

Jesus...

I may not be a Buddhist, but taking this from a Buddhist-reincarnation perspective, the last time I checked... The Chinese Government doesn't have control over your afterlife.

Seriously, it's sad to see how twisted and absurd the Chinese government is. I just pray for the day when they will become a democracy, or at least a more tolerant country...

You're correct, mazuac.

It would be like the Chinese Government declaring that only it can decide who is allowed to be saved by Christ, and that you have to formally apply for it through the government. It's absurd and it's offensive.

It's absurd and it's offensive.
And yet, it still makes me giggle. Assuming an earthbound government has control over what happens to someone in a religious afterlife sense is nonsense, regardless of what they believe it will accomplish.

The whole idea of it is so inane, it sounds like a plot from a bad movie. biggrin

That would make a fabulous plot for a bad movie! I love it! A parody of Wal-Mart determining who could and could not get into Heaven. It could involve club cards and the collecting of points!

I dont think they are trying to convince buddhists world wide that their fake dalai lama is the real lama. they are really only interested in how to more easily break up the religious traditions of tibet. the buddhists around the world dont have to recognise their fake dalai lama as the real one, just the tibetans and the buddhists within china. which would be easier than you would think seeing as the communist establishment has had a pretty subsatial grip on thought for the bast century.

Given Tibet will be exceedingly harder to break due to the fact that basicly everyday life is founded on their faiths. but the mind can be a fragile thing. this plan to create a fake religious leader amongst them is just the first step to truely abolishing buddhism in the region. this is without a doubt a very serious situation, with a very uncertain future.

This is absolutely horrible! For China to be able to break up the Buddhist Traditions in Tibet would be a huge blow to Buddhists everywhere... I can't even imagine this happening! And if what A Murder of Angels said is true about This Being the last Reincarnation of the Dalai Lama... Oh it just makes me want to cry! crying crying crying
