User Image Name: Salerni Atora D'Aubin
Age: 24
Profession: Wizard, specializing in potions
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 155

Appearance: Of medium height and plain appearance, Salerni is not overly concerned about being fashionable. He hides a small potbelly under a large robe and loose pants; his frame is otherwise thin. He wears metal-capped boots, and his grey eyes are often hidden behind the goggles he uses to protect his eyes when he works. He wears no jewelry; it would get in the way.

Prematurely grey hair runs in his family; he was silver-haired by the age of 18. He believes that it makes him look older and wiser, though the short, wild style cancels out the effect somewhat. He carries a staff when out and about to compensate for a weak left knee; he broke his leg as a child, and it was not seen to in time to heal completely correctly. Since he spends much of his time indoors, he is pale-skinned. He prefers to stay out of the sun anyway, as he sunburns easily.

Personality: Salerni is absentminded and scatterbrained, though he can focus very intently on his work. His records and workspace are often an unmitigated mess, though he claims to be able to find whatever he needs in the clutter. This is occasionally true. In spite of his memory troubles, however, he runs a reasonably successful business in potions and solutions. His work is careful and meticulous, and most of the magical potions he sells work as advertised.

He is mildly socially inept, and often doesn't quite realize that he can be abrupt and rude. He enjoys argument and debate, and will happily work himself up into a fine frenzy over some minor contested point. He can be an extremely loyal companion, once his allegiance is won, but he can also hold a grudge forever - or as long as he can remember it, at any rate.

He enjoys reading and study, and will participate in a friendly exchange of ideas and theories as happily as he will argue them. He rarely gets his facts mixed up. Though he has little memory for mundane things and must make copious notes to remind himself of everyday tasks, he remembers minor trivia and academic fact with tenacious clarity.

He has an affection for small animals of all sorts, and gives his lab mice and birds individual names. On the occasions that his experimental animals die, he is upset. He also has a soft spot a mile wide for dragons; when he had the opportunity to acquire his first egg, he was ecstatically delighted for days. He pampers his dragons and babytalks to them when he thinks nobody is looking, and even sometimes if somebody is.

Family: Salerni is one of the middle sons of a merchant family in a distant city. His father attempted to teach him bookkeeping and business sense in vain hopes of getting him involved in the family business. However, everyone was relieved when Salerni showed an aptitude for magic strong enough to allow him to attend a wizards' school.

He keeps in touch with his family through long and rambling letters, along with occasional visits. His mother dotes on him, his father tolerates him with gentle humor, his older siblings are not sure what to make of him, and his younger siblings absolutely adore him.

Education: Salerni was tutored along with his siblings by a private tutor as a child. In his mid-teens, he showed an interest in and talent for magic, and was sponsored to a private institute in Dorhaven on his family's funds. About a quarter of his earnings through his small business in potions is sent back to his family to assist in repayment of his tuition and to contribute to his younger siblings' future education.

Likes: Books, dragons, good food and wine, alchemic formulas, dragons, evening walks, dragons, debates
Dislikes: Stupidity, bright sunlight, heat, horses, illiteracy

Salerni's dragons:
Tzoa : female water affinity
- Tzoa is an affectionate and clever dragon. She likes to explore and will work complicated latches and devices to get to treats or shiny objects. Salerni has been forced to put keyed locks on his cupboards to prevent her from getting into his food and supplies. He keeps a large glass bowl filled with water for Tzoa; she likes to relax in it, keeping her skin supple and her body cool. Numerous shiny pebbles, small trinkets, and lost coins reside at the bottom of the bowl.

Venni: female growth affinity
- Venni is a calm, sweet female. Slightly smaller than average, she prefers to spend her time cuddled up to her wizard, or if that isn't practical, curled up nearby. Salerni must watch her carefully to ensure that she doesn't gain too much weight; she loves to eat and will find her own snacks whenever possible. While this has taken care of the cricket problem in the lab, it does leave her with bad breath.

Lavang: male affection affinity
- Lavang knows he's beautiful, and believes himself to be a Casanova among dragons. He will cuddle up to any female who'll allow his attentions. He is also affectionate towards humans, but mostly because he is well aware that a well enough charmed human will be more likely to give him trinkets or treats!

Vapor: male steam affinity
- Offspring of Tzoa and Atma, Vapor is a jumpy and excitable dragon. In spite of his parents' intelligence, he seems a little dull, often surprised by everyday occurrences. He is sweet-tempered to Salerni, but inclined to bite anyone else who tries to touch him.

Oste: - male fear affinity
- Oste is a sly and silent dragon. He prefers to keep to the shadows whenever possible, and enjoys startling humans. He treats Salerni with distant affection. The other dragons stay away from him, except for Wysp, who dotes on him and whose attention he tolerates.

Wysp - female dream affinity
- Wysp loves all humans, all dragons, and all the world, but she has taken a particular liking for Oste, for reasons nobody can quite figure out. She follows the skeletal dragon around and curls up with him, apparently not disturbed in the least by his unusual appearance.

Chioni - female snow affinity
- Salerni shares Chioni's bond with the reclusive wizard who owns Atma. The sweet-natured dragon splits her time between her two humans. She is the offspring of Atma and Amare, making her Vapor's half-sibling. However, she seems to be much more intelligent.

Cicatra - female change affinity
- Cicatra is a small dragon, somewhat shy and neurotic. She is easily pushed around by the other dragons, though she has learned to shriek when harrassed and hide in small crevices. She has a strong possessive and kleptomaniac streak, and Salerni must keep her out of the front of his shop for fear that she'll steal out of his customers' purses and pockets. Nonetheless, he lavishes love on her when she isn't hiding.

Borealis - male ice affinity
- Borealis is larger than any of the flock save for Lavang and Oste. He is a lazy and amiable dragon, uninclined to put forth much effort to get what he wants, but always willing to accept attention, affection, and treats. He prefers to stay in cool corners of the workshop and dislikes heat.

When the egg cracked, Salerni was asleep in the cot in the corner of the lab, mouth open, snoring most unattractively. Tzoa flared her headfins and climbed up the stained tapestry on the wall to poke her nose at the egg. Yes. Cracked. Wobbling. Hatching. Oooo.

She swarmed back down and trotted over to the cot, where she climbed the dangling blanket and chattered at Salerni. Wake up, stupid wizard! Egg is hatching. ... No response. Hm. Mouth open. Nothing nearby to drop in, though. She made her way up to the pillow, latched her foreclaws into messy gray hair, and yanked.

Her wizard yelled indignantly, his eyes popping open. She jumped off the cot and ran back over to the tapestry, content in the knowledge that he would pursue.

The egg, of course, distracted him. He made squeaky noises of glee and lifted the nest he had made it, carrying it back over to sit on the cot with it while he rubbed sleep out of his eyes and watched the hatching. Tzoa followed, settling on her haunches to observe, her tail swishing across the blankets.

The egg's inhabitant was remarkably energetic. The shell cracked and bulged quickly, pieces beginning to fall off. Salerni helped peel the shell away, setting the eggshell shards carefully aside for later grinding and use. The green and white dragon inside uncoiled and blinked damply at the wizard peering down at it. It unfurled delicate, translucent wings, spreading the membranes and fanning them tiredly to dry the moisture that still clung to the wings.

Then it crawled out of the remains of its shell, took hold of Salerni's politely offered finger in its foreclaws, and purred at him. He picked it up, his face alight with happiness, and tucked it into the front of his robe for warmth - after a quick check under the tail, at which the dragon - she - made only a token cheep of protest. She curled herself into a neat ball, put her tufted and still slightly damp tail over her nose, and went immediately to sleep.

Tzoa climbed Salerni's robe and poked her head inside to sniff at the new dragon. Friend. Maybe. Probably. Unless the newcomer stole her shinies.

Sept. ??

- Mild acid unsuccessful in transforming stone. Ruined part of workbench and burnt stack of notes. Back to the drawing board.

- Met wizard while out. Young man. Can't remember name. Two beautiful dragons. Master may visit shop; replenish stock, remember to clean.

- Purchased new crucible. Barely within affordable. Find new supplier?

- Eggshell shards selling low currently. Save till Midwinter, perhaps, when Festival eggs hatch and shells sold.

Oct. 2

- Located fire dragon's wizard bond. Potions master, severely disfigured. Very ugly. No wonder doesn't leave home. Does not mind Atma's visits to my workshop.

- Tzoa ready for breeding. Match? Request Raine at Emerald Scale. Combined elements useful for research, if matched right.

- New experiment - fertilizing potion. Venni's company very inspiring lately.

July 25

- Found this logbook under blankets while airing out cupboard. Other notebook is full anyway; may as well re-use.

- Wysp continues to follow Oste. Still do not understand why he tolerates this.

- Have acquired an experimental egg with no affinity. Will be exposing it to various influences to imprint it with an affinity. Egg is cool and unmarked. Venni has taken a liking to it; perhaps she will influence its eventual outcome.
