IGN Movies has caught a sneak peek of the upcoming DVD release for Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Complete Book 2 Collection, on which director M. Night Shyamalan has a frank conversation with the show's creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino about bringing the animated series to live-action life.

"I really was looking for something to do where I could do these cool fighting scenes and everything," Shyamalan explains in the "Interview with Creators and M. Night Shyamalan" bonus featurette. "Avatar had such a beautiful way of doing that. The supernatural, with all of the elements -- that's another huge thing for me and it's kind of based in all of this eastern stuff; it's really beautiful ideas behind it."

The filmmaker notes that the biggest challenge he will face adapting the series to live-action will be the practical demands of the locations.

"When you guys write a scene that [takes place] in the North Pole, you can do that. But we've got to be in Arctic weather for months on end," he says. Additionally, Shyamalan lets slip that he is struggling with the challenge of streamlining the show's story to fit into three two-hour films. "It's going to be really hard for me because I really loved what you guys did and I'm finding it hard to let go of anything. At first when I put the outline together, I showed it to you guys and it basically had every single thing you guys wrote."

He is getting a grasp on the material, however, and beginning to break down the story into three self-contained films.

"I think I've got to a place where I really know how to bring in the characters, and what characters I can save for the other movies, and what moments we can save for the other movies," Shyamalan says. "So it's really starting to take shape into a two-hour movie -- and I think that will happen for each of the three movies."

"I think they're going to be mostly unknown kids and teenagers," Shyamalan adds of his potential.

But he looks forward to the adaptation process as it will mark his first formal collaboration with other screenwriters on a movie.

"The really cool thing for me is that I close my door and I write my movies and it's just the most lonely, depressing process that anyone could go through. On this movie, I've got you guys to be depressed with me, so this is such an exciting thing for me."

I agree.

And are they getting the VA's to act in it, or ate the voices going to be completely different?

I'm conflicted, i mean Avatar movie! That's sweet but yah but what's his face (don't know how to spell it) isn't exactly the prime person to do a kids movie. But Tim Burton isn't really either but he's done kids movies! So who knows! And i hate it when the change the voices of the characters......maybe the can use the voice actors? Aangs actor is about the right age so who knows!

But he isn't the right built. And I doubt he'd want to do that much work. I think if they can find a close enough person (like how they did with Harry Potter), then I might not mind it being made by Shamalamalan, or however you spell it. Still, he has made some good movies and some bad ones....I'll hold my real opinion until I see a trailer...

It'd be terribly difficult to get the actors to do it. I mean, most of them do not look at all like the people they portray. Grey Delisle could no way (no matter how much I love her) play Azula, due to age and the like.

It would be great. But not possible without MAJOR changes

When I saw the commercial for the Book 2 box set and saw that there will be an interview with him, my hopes soared, proving that there is more to this than a simple rumor. I mean, a live-action Avatar movie? That would be awesome, but also scary, since I dont know if there have been many good and good-quality films made off of TV shows and video games (as examples. But books-turned-movies tend to come out better.) It sort of bothers me that you guys are going to base past movies of M. Night Shamalan's on the outcome of this. Did you really read the interview segments up there? To me, it sounds like he's got a deep respect for the show, and really wants to stay true to the story, characters, and theme, even if it will be difficult. (And I must say that there is a lot of stuff in the show that can easily be cut out of a film since it's not very plot-driven; just random episodes.) And I think the idea of unknown actors would be a good idea, too. That way, it can be a fresh movie. If they had some really well-known actors in it, that would sort of take away the feel of Avatar since (at least I do) we imagine original people as the characters, not big-time stars. (Hm, not sure if that sentence made much sense. . . sweatdrop )
So I say: Give it a chance. Shamalan sounds really psyched and dedicated about the idea of making a live-action film on it. And if it does turn out good, just imagine how awesome it would be! It would be great if it was a big-budget film(s), that way it would be really impressive. We don't want lame CG in this film, now do we?
(ugh! and just think: The Seige of the North!! That would be soooo awesome!! scream heart )
Hopefully, if it ever comes to fruit, it'll be one of those movies that will take your breath away on the big screen. I can imagine it being very beautiful with all the scenery and bending arts and costumes, you know?
And another thing: If a series of films were to reach production, it'll be in a few years or more. I mean, they made a Halo film script that they sent to (was it Universal films? I dunno), so that means that there just might be a Halo movie! But, if it does get worked on at all, it'll be a looong time. Just remember that. It may happen or it may not. It depends on how far Shamalan gets!

And that's my assessment! ninja

This is exciting news and Shyamalan sounds like he really wants to be true to the story...but I just don't know how well it would convert to film. There is hope friends..I mean if someone can turn Stardust into a nice movie maybe it can be done for Avatar.

well I've always loved his movies. Ever since Unbreakable with Bruce Willis. I'm looking forwards to it, though I'm nervous about the actors. I mean, yeah, they wont be the VA's, but nonetheless, I cant wait till a preview.
