I just got into a debate with someone in a Lesbian guild I go to. I had posted the article about Bush retrying the anti-gay marriage amendment and there were two ppl who didn't care because they dont care if they can marry or not as long as they're with their love. That's fine but I stated my oppinion that I think it's worth fighting for because some people actaully want to get married and if some people chose not to get married then that was ok. But one of the girls (who is actaully my mentor and I respect highly) said something back. I replied: (names are edited for privacy reasons)

It's like what B said. It's not about just the paper and it's not about owning a person. I mean, the other person agrees to marriage, it's not like someone is being forced into it. And plus, I could care less about the New God or whatever. I could care less if I get married in a church, but I would like to have civil union where I can legally join with my loved one. I want the benifits just like all the heterosexuals. And yes, I know that America isn't all that bad. There are much worse places. I understand that there shouldn't be a big deal made of our sexuality, but Homosexual marriages wasn't really a big deal untill this last election. And it's also like B said, it's about equality. Do you blame the African Americans for wanting and fighting for their right to be equal? Where they ignorant for the protests and speeches that they made?

Maybe Im just being a greedy b***h.. but it's your oppinion if you dont think there should be a big deal made; If you dont want to get married; Etc. And it's my oppininon and choice to protest or to join in a civil rights movement if it happens. I want my rights, so that we can lay the issue to rest and that we can leave it as an insignificant deal just like heterosexuality.

And my mentor's girlfriend replied:

Nor
now to compare homosexuality to the rights of african americans is not even a comparison. First off as homosexuals we can hold jobs, homes have all of our benifits from jobs and so on. When they were fighting for equal rights it was for something much ******** greater. They had to go to seperate restraunts, batherrooms jobs ride on seperate buses they were totally seperated from whites. If you could ******** show me where homosexuals are in a worse situation then blacks then I will agree but we do not have to deal with all the s**t they had to. Even once they aquired there civil rights all children of a bi~racial mix, or different color than white had to deal with teasing from everyone whites and those of the culture which they are mixed. So to ******** refer this to the same as civil rights is ignorrant. When you as a homosexual can go through what a bi~racial child did then you can contrast the two. I bet you have no ******** Idea what it is like to go through part of your childhood being teased cause you had one white parent and one who was not and then as a homosexual adult deal with the matters of being bi~racial and gay I gurantee that matters such as equal rights for gays matter not. And for anyone bi~racial trying to dispute me remember the time period in which I started school and consider the fact that then people were still being discriminitive towards bi~racial children.Espically if you were in a catholic school. To be 6 and chased home by older boys throwing beer bottles at you because you are of mixed race and you are running so fast you dart across the street and end up getting hit by a car. I guarentee that memory makes you truly care less for the rights of homosexuality.

and I replied again

AkureiKnight
I know it's not that bad. You dont have to ******** sit there and tell me. I may not be bi-racial myself but I do have a puerto rican step-father. But for anyone to have their rights taken and to be teased for any reason is worth fighting for! So you really shoudn't be getting offended. And those memories, should make you care more for homosexual rights because Im sure that homosexuals had their fair share of bad memories! All people should be treated with respect! That's what's wrong with this ******** world! So Im not ******** bad guy! If I could have I would have fought for bi-racial people.. but considering I was born in the late 80's I couldn't really do that. So excuse me for actaully wanting to make the ******** world easier for homosexuals, who are now seeming to have a hard time, whether it be as bad as the African Americans and bi racials or not!

Im out.. (shakes head).. I probably wont post for a few days in here. So I'll see you all around.

It just made me so mad she got all over my case for it. Am I wrong for refering what happened with African Americans to what is happening to us? sad

No I do not believe that you are wrong for doing that, however I think that the mentors g/f might have been right when she said that it wasn't exactly the same issue. However it is true that GLBT people get a lot of ridicule and I think that you should continue to fight for equal rights, irregardless of what other lazy ppl think.

I know it's not the same.. but they didn't have certain rights and we dont either.. and I was just making a point that we aren't ignorant for fighting for equal rights. But Im going to be taking a break from that guild for a bit

I established what your point was, and you know what, I forgot why I even said the rest of what I said last post.

I think you're totally not in the wrong here. Sure, between the two, points are different, but the issue is still the same, and it's a pretty good comparison, if you ask me.

It may not be exactly the same thing but at the core it's probably very close to the same. Both groups are/were looking for equal rights, and I think it's a perfectly reasonable comparison.
