So I woke up this morning and hopped on Facebook to waste some time, and I saw something that was relevant to my interests. Simple a link of today's poll: "HD DVD or Blu-Ray?" I go to see the results, and at first I'm thinking, "Wow, HD DVD got about a third. Not bad for them." Then I looked a little closer. HD DVD got more responses than Blu-Ray...by a LOT....so here's the breakdown.
HD DVD:643 Blu-Ray:357
Answer Breakdown by Sex Female: 80% HD DVD, 20% Blu-Ray (299 answered) Male: 58% HD DVD, 42% Blu-Ray (700 answered)
Answer Breakdown by Age 13-17: 75% HD DVD, 25% Blu-Ray (204) 18-24: 64% HD DVD, 36% Blu-Ray (54 cool 25-34: 55% HD DVD, 45% Blu-Ray (202) 35-49: 71% HD DVD, 19% Blu-Ray (34)
So yeah...I don't really know what to think of this. I thought that Blu-Ray had the lead, but according to a poll like this, the majority of people still choosing DVD are planning on going HD DVD when that time may come. Interesting, but I guess it's no to be unexpected.
PS I though it was funny that 1000 people responded, but the gender totals only add up to 999. I LOLed.

One poll for one site doesn't really account for everyone else in the world... There's a shitload more that the given 1000 or 999 people that want either blu-ray or HD DVD.
I'm sure Blu-ray is still in the lead, just not according to facebook.
BlockBuster, which accounts for a lot of video rentals, is supporting Blu-Ray.

BlockBuster, which accounts for a lot of video rentals, is supporting Blu-Ray. Actually, this poll is a big deal if it reflects other random polls. You see, this poll obviously does not take into account HD format users, but EVERYONE. Meaning that people not yet buying HD disks are PLANNING on buyig HD DVD at this time, which could mean a lot more in a few years, especially as HD DVD now has Dreamworks and Paramount.

Heh heh, How many people do you think this poll applies to? As in, How many votes are gathered into this poll? This really make no more difference. It doesn't matter if more people want HD-DVD if most people are buying Blu-ray.

I wanna find something I've wanted all along.... Also, how many of these people do you actually think know anything about the formats? Most people buying HD DVD and Blu-ray players now, are early adopters(duh), and as of right now, they're expensive. So I really think more tech savvy people are going to be buying them this early at their prices currently. People are going to take account the advantages and the disadvantages of each. I'm sorry if this is ignorant, but it's just the truth, Blu-ray is all-around superior technology-wise to HD DVD. Like you said Jawes, Blu-ray is an advantage for the PS3 even if the Cell is kind of a draw-back. Higher transfer-rate, and bigger storage. I'm not saying everybody on face-book is like this but in general I bet most type like this "i bet HD DVD is going 2 win! u r stupid if u think Blu-ray is". Like I said, I'm not meaning everybody, but in general. On overrated websites like Myspace and Facebook, most of the people are going to chose the opposite of what they don't like. The PS3 supports Blu-ray, and who is the scrape-goat of the media? The PS3. "Z0MG!! TH3 PS3 LIK3 SUX0RS!!! ITZ T00 3XP3N5IV3 @ND WH0 N33D5 BLU3 R@Y!??" The mass is usually secondary swayed by the media because idiots just drag on the hate and what ever is hyped to other people and the mass will just follow what everyone else thinks. PS3 supports Blu-ray and HD-DVD is the competitor of Blu-ray. I think this is one of those "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Or object in this matter. I bet you at most only 40% of those people know the technical specs of the two. There's also the fact HD DVD seems more American supported than Blu-ray so a percentage of those people might be more swayed because of patriotism. But those are just possibilities to me *shrugs* ....Somewhere I belong

I think the biggest thing that it tells us is that people DON'T know that Blu-Ray is better, so if Toshiba was able to release a $99 HD DVD player, it could theoretically kill Blu-Ray just because the people who haven't done format research would say, "ZOMG! DVD IN HD!!!!1" and when shown only that Blu-Ray is a disk say, "HD GOES WITH AN HD TV, NOT 8LU3-RAY!" It's a disadvantage to Blu-Ray, and common sense is a lost art in our society. It might be a great idea to start advertising to the general public showing that there are two new disk formats, ans show the advantages of Blu-Ray. I try to tell people this when the whole HD DVD and Blu-Ray thing comes up, and most people see that Blu-Ray is superior just because it can store more and it has a protective layer, making them much harder to damage. Just a matter of someone standing up to stomp out some ignorance.

It doesn't matter if more people want HD-DVD if most people are buying Blu-ray. It might, though. By the time these players are pretty cheap, if HD DVD is still around, you might see a huge surge in HD DVD sales due to the ignorance of the public. If HD DVD can't gain enough speed to keep up with Blu-Ray, it won't be a problem, but it might be a chance for Sony to sweep in and beat out the ignorance before that happens.

Just a matter of someone standing up to stomp out some ignorance. I wanna find something I've wanted all along.... Yeah, overall Blu-ray is superior in all categories *shrugs* I'm not saying HD DVD is bad, just simply that Blu-ray is better. I don't see how it can't be fact. Now, if HD DVD were to drop dramatically in price compared to Blu-ray, it will probably justify it's purchase over it. But as to which is better, technology-wise, Blu-ray is. Like you said, Someone needs to come out and advertise the two and compare the difference. Though most people tend to be ignorant even if something is proved to be superior. If people are told about the better storage, transfer rate, and durability. There excuse would simply be "HD DVD is cheaper(By like what, a few dollars? rolleyes ) and it does the same thing" That's how ignorant most people tend to be. *shrugs* Honestly, I have nothing against HD DVD. I just don't see a point in having two formats that are for the same thing but one be inferior. I guess it's just one of those things to drive media. They'll root on HD DVD and let Blu-ray get more movies then start rooting for Blu-ray but HD DVD comeback with more movies and then it's just a pattern. I think it's some media drive to keep it a hot topic and milk as much purchases out of both as possible until one actually comes out on top. ....Somewhere I belong

If this is a continuing trend, it kills the "HD DVD is cheaper" advantage.

*laughs* I hate to point it out, but according to this poll, 100% of people pick Blu-Ray. mrgreen
The problem with a Facebook poll is that it is filled with bored people who will click on anything to avoid doing actual work. I really really doubt that even 20% of those voters have ever given any actual though to The High-Def Choice or done ANY research on it. When they go to Blockbuster and see "Oh, hey, this movie I want is on Blu Ray" they'll remember that. Same for the 300 fanatics who want all the extra crap that the HD-DVD version has. They're not going to care about price or technical aspects, they're only going to remember which version had what they wanted.
