Hmm. I personally don't see how anything new will come of this discussion... but hey, I don't care. I've said all that I can think of, anyways.

Actually, the only question I still have is why do people think it's so important to know?

well if someone is trying to consider how long earth will last (or how much llonger we have on it), they will wonder how long the earth has been around. and if you want to consider how much life and society has changed over the ages (which might be done to consider how much it will change in the future) you would also be curious about earth's age. I think that is why people would want to know.

I say we have less then a thousand years. before Jesus returns. Why do I think that. Well, we are in the generation of the fig tree.

It has been little over six thouasand years since Adam. That is six of God's days.

He created the Earth in seven.

I believe Jesus will return on the begining of the seventh(seven means Spirit Perfection).

Judgement day will be at the end of the seventh. The eight day will mark the third Earth age. (eight means regernation or renew)

I would say, we will see the two tribualtions soon.

You do much research. Good job. I didn't know that 8 meant regeneration/renew.

What you all are forgetting to take into account is that there was a great deal of time before Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2.

I doubt it'd be 4,000. The oldest tree today that is still living is a 4300 year old bristlecone pine.

If you calculate all the dates in the Bible, it will add up to be around 6,000 years old. 3nodding

I'd like you to explain the meteor and comet theory...I'm not sure what you're talking about. sweatdrop

I wouldn't use tree rings as a very accurate source for dating, although I tend to agree with the 6000-8000 year theory. Trees can grow several rings in a single year, sometimes up to three or four (I can't remember which it is). I've always laughed when people try to use those for a sure fire date, but that is just my opinion.

I think you mean between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. I'm using my NIV and I must say that "Now the earth was formless and empty" makes it pretty clear that it was talking about right after it was created. I'm no student of Hebrew, I am an English major. So all I have to work on is the English words, and from what it looks like to me it is saying some like:

"The earth was created. Now there wasn't anything there mind you, it was empty and dark."

That is just how I have always read it though, so don't try to hang me if you think I'm wrong razz

Me too.. I think we give him too little credit if we say it took him thousands of years to create the world. He is all powerful you know... 3nodding

I don't think it is given Him little credit. More like He has a plain. After all, there are records of humans being here a lot long then 6000 years. You say He created the Earth on six 24 hour days but the sun was not created till the fouth day. Plus there is a study on the pre-adam human race. How it goes is on the sixth day God create all of man kind. This means all the races where made from nothing. The word create is not the same as form. They both a different meanings. Create means to make from nothing and form means to make out of something. Even in the Hebrew the words are two different words.

Some people who have study the original text indept have come across the the six day man fell under Satan's control, dont ask me how I'm just tell what they said. Then Ha adam, or "The man" in english," was form from the dust. He was formd on the 8th day. Eight being the number of regeneration. This blood line would be the line in which tha salvation of all mankind would come. And it is true the Jesus came to save all man kind. Also, one must remember that Cain went into another land to find his wife so we know other people were here.

Ok, first there was day and night before day 4. On day 1 "God said, ""Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.(Genesis 1:3-5). So, there was day and night.

The second thing is about Cain's wife. I think that because Adam and Eve lived for over 500 years I think the other people were Adam's offspring. Why? Well there was no law back then saying that you could not marry your sibling, so it wasn't unlawful then, to people anyway. And God, in his wisdom, permitted it before and after the flood so the the Earth would be populated and the whole human race could grow and spread out. Along with that, we do not know how many kids Adam had between Cain and Seth. Since there was no birth control then, and I doubt Adam and Eve had sex only three times in that time span it would make sense Cain had plenty of woman to choose from.

Ok, well, first, you can't really go by the dates given, because the majority of them given are by radio carbon dating. But this method has been proven innacurate on at least two accounts that I know of. One where they took a rock from a Hawaiin island that has been confirmed to have been formed 100 years ago, yet when they radio carbon tested it the youngest date they got was 700 million years old (somewhere around there, I don't remember the exact number) and the oldest they got was 4 billion years old.
Another example was that they took a rock formed by the Mt. St. Helens eruption and they dated it, and got similar dates as the Hawaiin rock.

Also, the Hebrew word used in the context it was used, according to Hebrew rules, could only mean a 24 hour period. It had to be used in other context to be used metaphorically. I just studied this bit of Hebrew under my pastor. biggrin

Where does the Bible say that the earth is in the thousands you ask? The Bible includes the the ages of many people when they had their children and their children and so on. Tracing the lineage, we can conclude that it is 6,000- 10,000 years old. Furthermore, history agrees.

Science also agrees. I have journal entries about that.

Here's my belief on Earth's age. Now, How do we know that God's days are the standard twenty-four hours of the human day? His could be eons for all we know. I conclude that the Earth could very well be 4.6 billion years old like mainstream science states, and still be created by God. God does not follow the human laws of physics, though he did create them. He is the only being in the universe that is literally above all law, and I would go so far to say that he's above the human length of day.
