I forgot about the number one rule of anime... never decide you like a character until the series is over... My most recent series wound up with my top 3 dyin' before it was over and the rest of my favs just didn't do well...

Isn't that pasrt of entertainment. Being led on by a character only to be shocked by their actions or deaths?

Maybe... but come on, growing to like a character and seeing her grow and change, survive a huge war, walk away beaten by her own friends in an attempt to show her the right path, and then after she accepts that path she is struck down and becomes a infant in mind and heart with no memories of her past save the name of the hero and even that is vague and incomplete.
Or having a main character come to the hero warning him of an impending attack allowing the hero to fortify his defenses but not telling him that the oncoming forces intentionally marched through his village and the people living there had been savagely murdered and every building was razed to the ground. Allowing you to find this out later killing the feeling of victory you feel having just seen the hero save his country from the invaders.
Earlier today I felt like looking for a box big enough to mail my a** to japan for bit of a talk.
((and the examples above were real examples from real anime...))

Wolf's Rain had some pretty good shockers. One of the ones that really got me was.... *Spoiler* When that lady dies.
