Sorry I haven't posted here in awhile ladies and gentlemen. ^^. But hopefully I'll be more active now. Had a rather busy summer.

Anyways, I see alot of topics about the lolita clothes, and their costs, but not too many about the lolita spirit of being innocent and friendly. ^^. I love the clothes, but what really makes me a lolita is my want to be that innocent and friendly. So I made this topic for us all to talk and everone to get to know each other a little, and to discuss what makes up the lolita spirit.

So...
Discuss:

Getting to know everone.
What do you think makes a lolita spirit?
Anything else that may come!

I really do agree with the whole idea of the lolita spirit too. I think it's kind of the ideal childlike image that a lolita can aspire to. Someone who is innocent, gentle, kind and polite. But that's just my own vision. Personally I try to act more lolita even when I'm not wearing the clothing because it gives me a reason to watch my bad language and even my posture. Overall, trying to become more lolita has given me self confidence and a sense of fulfillment because I'm doing what I want to do. However, although I do smile, I try not to be friendly with strangers cause' there are so many creepy people around and I don't want to be stalked etc. But among my friends/classmates certainly. What kinds of things do you find yourself doing to be lolita Lady Angelishia? And anyone else too.

I don't really go out of my way to be lolita. >.<. See, I just like to be kind to people. I make sure that I am nice to everyone, and if I slip and say something mean, then I apologize, or spend a great deal of time feeling bad if an apology is impossible. I'm not as childlike as your average lolita though, and possibly not as polite, partially because I find no problem with swear words as long as they're not overused and are used because of a strong feeling, not to impress your company as I see most of the time I hear a swear word.

I wasn't trying to judge you or anyone else, I just wanted to stop using so many swear words in my own personal life. mainly cuz I swear at every little thing sweatdrop sorry if I offended you (or anyone else)

For myself lolita to me is serene beauty, calm, graceful, collected, etc. A doll. Someone there but unattainable, that is what my lolita spirit is.

Even though the general idea is not just in the clothing, but to act kindly, polite, innocent and refined, and I do often go along with that because I was practically raised that way. Plus, it feels good (to me) to stick out of the normalcy of teen stereotyping. Over the summer, I've been re-reading Kamikaze Girls and I remember repeating the author's note about what lolita is in his perspective. He viewed the fashion as the spirit of punk that celebrates tradition and beauty and I totally go by that.

I often find myself speaking for Sir Takemoto, especially when I'm defending the fashion. I remember talking to someone who was new to the fashion (it's a guy too) and he made a terrible assumption (don't worry, it was over the internet. rofl But we're friends now):

I don't shop at either of those stores, for I hardly ever do any clothing shopping, but being the person I am, I like to go to thrift shops. My mom doesn't mind. It's kinda fun going shopping there and finding stuff that I wouldn't find in malls. Plus it's nice to get a lot for not too much money. If I do shopping, I mostly invest in things like books. The only expensive brands I actually like looking through are lolita brands. If any average American girl who visits the mall every weekend to buy brands, they'll faint at the prices of lolita brands. We're talking about yen to dollars!

NO THEY'RE NOT KINKY PORNO DRESSES! AND THEY ARE NOT, I REPEAT NOT COSTUMES!!!! YOU TAKE THAT BACK MR.!

It's a real (street) fashion that is based on Victorian, Rococo, American 50s, and Edwardian fashion. And it's totally European! Come on: Lace, ruffles, frills, petticoats, bonnets, mary janes....Have you ever read or watched Alice in Wonderland?

The reason why I'm offended, even though I forgive you for your ignorance, is because real Lolita fashion isn't like that at all and the designers and followers hate it when people mistake them for cheap, kinky costumes, and we get that AN AWFUL LOT.
Look at it this way: if you see two girls together, one wearing a knee length jumper with a lacy blouse (with buttoned collar), mary janes and stockings, and another girl wearing
a mini skirt, tank top, and high heeled sandals, who looks more innocent? Lolita fashion is an example of punk fashion that celebrates beauty and tradition. Whole different idea than of kinky costumes, made with cheap rayon (thanks a lot Hot Topic e_e).

It kind of depends on whether you see Lolita as a fashion or a lifestyle.

I know some Lolis just see it as a fashion, but since Lolita requires so much effort (cost or sewing, defending, ignoring odd looks) I can't see it as anything other than a lifestyle.

Punk that celebrates beauty and tradition... I really like that. It's such a good way to explain it.

Lovely words. heart

Sadly enough the lifestyle is misused as a source to make excuses.

To me, Lolita is trying to find the little girl in yourself, to celebrate beauty, elegance, and modesty, which are all but forgotten in today's world.

To me a person with lolita spirit is sweet and kind. Also in my opinion people with this spirit are wonderful special people you don't meet everyday and they always try to find good in bad things.

I think that there are fashion-oriented lolitas and lifestyle-oriented lolitas, and I'm stuck somewhere in the middle.

When I think of lolitas, I think of poised individuals who are kind and ladylike. I get really sad, when I meet a snobby, rude lolita (It's happened a couple of times). However, I'm a firm believer in my mother's saying, "The clothes don't make the person." I agree with many of the things that you all said that you imagined lolitas to be.
