When I saw this thread, I thought you were talking about the song "Sweet Jane" by the Velvet Underground.

"What in the world ever became of Sweet Jane?" is a lyric from the Grateful Dead's "Truckin'". I think what they're saying is that, in the early seventies, the hard-drugs culture was overtaking the marijuana-LSD culture.

By all accounts, the supply of pot in a lot of major cities shrank by 1970 or so. At the same time, drugs like cocaine and heroin became more available (this has led many to assume that certain government agencies wanted to sabotage the peace movement by poisoning the participants with hard drugs). It is possible for a person to flirt with hard drugs for a while, but in the end, addiction and other bad consequences await. The Dead were probably seeing a lot of their friends go through an agonizing and possibly deadly addictive cycle. By 1973 or so, dangerous drugs were all around, and those that didn't avoid them often didn't survive the experience. These drugs led to a change in the sound of rock and roll music, and music gradually became louder and angrier during this time. Distorted guitar tone, to me, always seems to suggest neuroreceptors crying out for the next hit, or heads mourning dead friends- which could be a throwback to the early days of blues music. Also implicit in the new sound would have been an impression of the speed and complexity of a modern world; computers, jet engines, rapid social change, etcetera.

Even the Velvet Underground acknowledged this phenomenon. On the disc "Live at Max's Kansas City" (which I think was recorded in 1973) you can hear someone in the audience requesting the Velvets' trademark song "Heroin", but Lou says "No, we don't play Heroin anymore."

Jane's Addiction were influenced strongly by the Velvet Underground.

The sweet leaf should be legalized.

I think it would be so much safer if the government regulated it. Days of worrying about some douchebag lacing your weed with god knows what would be more or less over. Not to forget, the government could make a killing off of marijuana sales.

The silly thing is that there are more harmful substances that can be easily acquired by simply walking into a drugstore. Cough Syrup anyone? wink

I think doing hard drugs is just stupid. And I've done my share of coke, e and meth... which was really stupid of me. I consider myself fairly lucky, that I got out when I did.

The scarier thing is that younger teens are going for harder drugs now. My sister, who is 15, has friends that have had access to cocaine since they were 13.

The government needs to focus on real problems and real solutions. Keeping marijuana illegal is pointless, by providing regulated weed to the public we'd be a hell of a lot safer. Go after the methheads not the potheads.

thats a head-on observation there. ive already whitnessed two kids i knew drop out / get expelled from highschool for their use/intent to sell hard drugs, though im sure that sort of thing has been going on since the mid-1900's. ive had access to (and denied) way more drugs than i should have by my age, (15) and i find it rather disturbing how fast kids are growing up these days. its tragic how much earlier teens are having sex and doing drugs and falling into bad habits. [god, im starting to sound like an old person.] and something should be said about how it not only goes on, but its pushed on others. thanks to a few dealers who go to my school, over 500 teens between the ages of 13 and 18 tried ecstacy at a school dance when the punch was spiked. (though we should also give some credit to the chaperones who showed up drunk) it funny though, i didnt realize i was on drugs until i got confused about why the earth was shaking and things started getting really close and i got dizzy and sweat alot, but i had eight or nine cups of pucnh, so luckily not everyone was as influenced as i was.
and i hate to admit it, but that was one of the most fun times ive had in a while. [and after typing that, i see that its pretty pathetic that the funnest times ive aver had i spent under some influence or another.]
