Buy the cheapest one, I say. Both I believe are to be decent games (playing Koden 4, I can confirm that). Not spectacular, but worth a playthrough. Therefore, get the cheapest one first.

going cheap may be a toss up if its new but if you like a challenge and i mean a challenge as in its a f@#king hard game go nocturne but if you want tho see the koden world before the other games and have a completely different type of world, a world a sea go with suikoden 4

my rating,

SMT nocturne-6.5
suikoden 4 -7.5

I've been playing it for a while now. It isn't a bad game, but it isn't as good as any of the other Suikoden games so far. If you are a fan of Suikoden then go ahead and give it a try, since the game wasn't hyped up or anything so its not like you'll be dissapointed for it failing to live up to any hype. Most places I have seen it sell it new for about $30.

I suggest you get SMT Nocturne first since it's an Atlus game, meaning it's gonna be rare later on. But if you can, get both of them. SIV isn't the best game, but it's still fun. Get SMT Nocturne first if you're worried it might run out of stock. And SMT Nocturne is much more challenging than SIV if you're interested.

S4 is a good game. Not as good as the first two, but better than 3. And it will probably be really hard to come by later on.

But again, I have a friend that owns Nocturn, and he says it kicks all kinds of butt. So I would say it all depends on if you want to stay in Suiko world or play an excellent(or so I've heard) RPG.

Personally....Suikoden 4 has a similar yet not so similar feel as Suikoden 2
Nocturne on the other hand- although is a good game, I found it quite annoying and never finished...

by now though I haven't seen Nocturne in stores anywhere around here though but have still seen quite a few Suikoden 4's still hanging around

so it depends on which you rather collect domokun

I haven't played Nocturne so I can't say which is better, but I can tell you what to expect from S4.
The loading can be slow, you only get 4 characters in your party, and there don't seem to be that many combo attacks. The main character has little personality, and the story is pretty simple. However, I still like this game. Although the story is simple at first glance, there is development towards certian characters. As well as seeing the ugliness of situations. There are plenty of cute moments as well. You should try renting the game if you really aren't sure, and ask yourself if you really want it.

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, I've even been able to find S4 at some Walmarts, but I don't think I've ever seen Nocturn in stores. It could be that it's even rarer than S4.

I say if it comes down to deciding between two games and reading reviews doesn't help make up your mind you should flip a coin.
