(sorry don't know how to quote, but don't really need to...

in regards to the Buffy comment...its actually a little bit of a feminist film if you think about it. Its about female impowerment and breaking the steriotype of damsel in distress...(sorry, nerd with a degree in buffyology)

anyways...I think there are still what I'd call "gender roles" the things women are supposed to do and what men are supposed to do. Which is pretty much what this thread is about. I don't relate with the gender role of womyn, but since I was raised as a female, and my parents did all the steriotypical things you do when raising a female child. I was forced into female gender roles by chores...washing dishes, doing laundry, not playing video games. I mean as a female you learn things like that earlier than the males of the family (I started doing my own laundry when I was maybe 12? And doing it independently...no parents doing it ever at 13ish) I have a younger brother...he is 16, doesn't know how to do laundry fold clothes, anything like that.

Today the average womyn is taking on more and more work than before. Expected to work, raise kids, cook dinner, go to soccer practice, and look good doing it.

I think that the expectations for a woman as being weak, and having to do so much while the men are not as responsible for much...

okay, just realized how long that was....I think I'm going to take a nap from all that brain power.

So love you wink ...I love men with feminist opinions!!! It's good that you don't hold the egotistical views & can accept that todays women do have a lot on their plates to deal with 4laugh !!!! Btw you're not the only nerd with a degree in buffyology...but I also have one in angelology & hexology...so your not a big nerd redface

Women stereotypes should be burned.

In a commercial, in our country ---

there was this girl and she was a house wife and she was cooking dinner. Then her husband comes in telling her, "The food smells superb. Oh and the boss is here so you have to smell nice." And she smiles, dimples and all, cocking an amused eyebrow. Then when she served the food the boss was like, "The food smells nice," and the husband hugs his wife and tells her, "Yeah and I like your smell more"...

That's a little bit offending---

Oh, you mean something like "Women don't need to go to college, because once they are married and have kids, they will stay at home and be a nice housewife"?

Even though streotypes are widly used & can upset people I think in the day & age that people that use stereotypes know that that's all they are: A made up/ traditional belief of certain expectations from certain groups in society!

i believe that almost all stereotypes are based on fact, although the fact might not be true anymore. they had to come from somewhere. for example, the stereotype that all germans hate jews. obviously this is not true anymore, but during world war two, many germans did hate jews. that's where the stereotype came from.

Not that I aruing but according to your theory where does the idea that all blondes & Irish are dumb?! Does anyone know the roots of other streotypes I mean some are obvious but others???

almost all stereotypes are based upon fact.
blondes are dumb...that's just stupid. the smartest kids at my school (i would include myself in this) are blonde. i've never heard that the irish are dumb before.

In Britain the most common jokes would be the 'Englishman, Irishman, Scotsman' jokes all of which being the Irishman who is thick or drunk and is generally made out to be an idiot!

well, i'm from alabama, so i don't encounter those sorts of jokes. i have heard that the irish are drunk a lot. yes, there are a lot of pubs in ireland (as far as i know); i guess that's where that stereotype came from. but it's been exaggerated a lot.

here the most common jokes would probably involve dumb blondes. which is another random stereotype.

Their are a lot of stereotypes that I fit into, I smoke, I'm blonde, a little overweight, a female, and a lesbian... it sounds like the beginning of a joke "A fat, blonde, smoking lesbian walked into a bar..." xp (I'll have to make that one up later) But I think that, like me, most people know that stereotypes are not true and to just shrug them off when they are directed towards you.
As harmful as they can be, they are not going to stop anytime soon, they are a psychological phenomenon. We use stereotypes to chunk small pieces information into larger sections because our STM(short-term memory) can only process 7+/- 2 (5-9) pieces of information at any given time... well, to go much farther with that I would have to give you a psychology lecture, but the point is that there is a psychological reason for stereotypes.

I'm kinda tired.

all stereotypes have become this wall between some people. it reminds me a particular mtv commercial where people only sit people who's wearing same color shirt, then this girl wearing red t shirt got up and sit down with different color t shirt.

i hate women stereotypes, i ignored them now these days.

There's always going to be stereotypes like that, but women have stereotypes of men too. That doesn't make them right though.

Exactly. We have tons of stereotypes about men but is that ever addressed?

well, when you see advertisments of male and female models, the women are very provacative and the men are usually dresses very sophisticated. More so, females are more alluring in ads...since many of the poses are targeted towards male attention...if you get my drift.
