The sun was just dipping below the horizon as the blue beetle made it's way down the road. The sky was painted in an array of beautiful pastel oranges, pinks, and violets. It had been a humid and sticky day so the windows were rolled up and the cool breeze of the air conditioning rolled through the vehicle. The strange man that was driving the car sported a loose black tank top, and a pair of shorts. His hair matched his pants, the both of them a dark violet color. He looked somewhat intimidating with his strong build, odd hair and numerous tattoos, however if you were to look at his face you would never think the man was capable of harming a fly. He was grinning from ear to ear, overly excited about the strangely bovine looking child strapped into a safety seat in the back of the car.
The young boy hadn't said much since the man picked him up from the laboratories. The people there hadn't told him much on the matter. He was merely brought into a room where he was told that this odd man would now serve as guardian from now on. He wasn't quite sure what the whole thing meant, or where exactly he was going. However the man seemed nice enough, although his appearance tended to intimidate the little boy somewhat. He seemed to be fixated with the man’s tattoos at the moment, tracing the visible ones with his eyes looking at all the odd and intricate designs.
The driver found himself taking his eyes off the road more than he probably should, looking at the child through the rear view mirror. He was ecstatic to finally have a child, a child of his very own, and in his own personal opinion it was the cutest damn child he had ever seen. He had then realized that in all the excitement and his afternoon spent at the lab’s facilities going through rigorous questions and paper work, he had not eaten since that morning. Seeing how it would be the first evening with the boy he decided that he'd take him out to eat. He decided a simple trip to McDonalds would probably be a nice place that the boy would enjoy.
"Hey little buddy, ya wanna go get dinner at McDonalds?" He asked interupting the boy’s concentration on the tattoos.
"...McDonawds?" He asked confused, he hadn't heard of the place before, although, he hadn't heard much of anything before.
"Yeah, I bet ya'd love it, all the little tykes like McDonalds." He said with a smile.
The boy nodded with a bit of an agreeing grunt wrapping his mind around the fact that it was some sort of restaurant.
The car turned right and entered a street filled with all sorts of different restaurants and fast food joints. Once the child caught sight of this his eyes immediately scanned the many neon signs and billboards in amazement.
The man pulled up to the McDonalds drive through. Luckily it wasn't too busy that evening so there was no line.
"Welcome to McDonalds may I take your' order?" The speaker burst into life as the man rolled his window down. The speaker startled the boy but once finding its source gazed at it in wonderment.
"Yeah, could I get a grilled chicken sandwich, no tomatoes, a medium sprite and a cheese burger happy meal please?” He spoke back to the speaker the toddler clueless as to where the other person was.
"That will be seven sixty seven please pull up to the first window." The speaker returned before falling silent again and the car crept up around a corner to the side of the building where he stopped at a window where a person in a yellow and red uniform was waiting.
"Seven sixty seven please sir." The girl said as the man got some dollar bills and change out of the armrest and handed it over to the employee.
"Thank you, please pull up to the next window." She said before closing the glass pane and the car sprang into motion once more. At the second window a boy with a voice problem and a lot of red spots on his face waited with a bag and a holster with two drinks in it.
"Here you go sir, please come again." He said as the driver took the bag and cups from him gratefully.
"Here ya go lil buddy, hope ya like it." The man said taking a colorful cardboard box out of the larger bag and handing it back to the boy but kept the drink in the front seat for home so there would be no spills.
"Thanks mister Don." The boy said reaching out to take the meal with his pudgy little hands.
"You're welcome little man." Don said with a laugh the boy still not understanding, or not comfortable enough yet to call him dad. Once back on the road the little boy curiously opened the package and took out an oddly wrapped sandwich with strange bread. Hungry nonetheless he took no time unwrapping it and taking a bite. His eyes instantly lit up as he immediately gained a great liking for the food. It was not long before he had finished his entire happy meal some specks of food remaining around his face. The sun now gone from sight, a dark blanket enveloped the town and the lights sprang on all around them. Don had watched his new son eat his first meal with him in the rear view mirror, the smile that he left the labs with still not fading from his face.
Not too long after the child’s dinner he grew drowsy from the long day he had had and his eyelids drooped down ever so slowly until he fell unconscious into a silent and innocent sleep. A little while later Don pulled the car up to a fairly nice looking house, one story ranch, brown in color and surrounded in ancient looking trees. He pulled the automobile into the garage and turned off the ignition and got out of the car as quietly as he could. He headed over to the back door and opened it quietly then gently un-strapping the lad from the seat he hoisted him out and held him in his arms, still in blissful dreamland. Don headed to the door and on the way the round little boy, with the strangest horns atop his head, three tails sticking out from his behind, and cloved hoof feet, nuzzled up against his father giving out a soft yawn like moo as he made himself more comfortable against him. In that moment the most important thing to the man known as Don Piano became the little bundle of joy named Tanner that rested adorably in his arms.
