As a guitarist, do I have to learn most of the chords or just the basics.

Also, I'm still messing around with chords, so I was hoping if any of you guys would like give me a few to play with. Just give me the name and I'll go see how it's formed.

look, first of all i find it very hard to believe that you will ever know "all the chords"(not only you)
and about tyour question... its just depend on alot of things... look knowing more things can always just make you better. but actually if ypur play rock or metal its less likely to be using all the "special chords" you use it more on jazz and blues....
so my answer to you is "depends on how seriously youre intending to take your guitar career"...

hope i could supply any assistance

Wow, I hate to tell you this, but that's so wrong it's bad. If you want to move ahead in rock and metal you have to find ways of using different chords to make things interesting.

Not only that, but complex chord structure is very commonly used in solo structure. Since you want to phrase solos in a smart way, you can use chord tones to write, and hey, why not make it sound cool too?

Try a bunch of 7th and 9th and 11th chords to get you going. They're quite cool in distortion.

First of all, establish the basics before you jump to complicated chord structures, memorize the major chords (by that i mean the open and the barre chords), this will give you a good foothold on chords, and by the way chords and scales are not different by their function in music as you think, they are quite similar, and as what Chibi- Boku wrote it makes things interesting, may it be in dist or clean.

I prefer dist though.

Ewww, 11th chords with distortion... *Shivers.*

If you're new and like to play with a bit of gain stick to 5ths. I mean if greenday can build a career off using only 5ths anyone can!

I love using thirds and sixths with distortion. Minor 7ths all ways sound good too. wink .
