Well, today was… interesting, to say the least. I decided that I needed some fresh air and felt that the meadow just outlining the forest would be the perfect place to do some thinking. After all, there was always the chance that being near the forest would help me figure out my… uh… power. And stuff.
It… didn’t work out so well. Xylia stole my glasses, so that was bad. But, not everything turned out badly; I met someone new today, a student named Vlasia Aspera and her dragon, Stolz. Stolz and Xylia got along very well, which was absolutely adorable. I don’t mind saying it. They were just… so damned cute.
Vlasia and I spoke a bit about various things. She didn’t seem to think less of me just because I’m a commoner. Oh! She’s from the House of Thorns. Forgot to mention that. Where was I? Oh, yes. She even seemed impressed by some of what I had to say, although I don’t know if she was just pretending or not. She has some control over others’ emotions. Very interesting stuff… oh, and some minor control over water as well, since that’s Stolz’s secondary affinity.
Anyway, that’s when things took a turn for the worst. Vlasia asked me to demonstrate my ‘powers’. I tried to make a dandelion grow. I really did try… I summoned a flock of butterflies. Yeah. Stand in awe of my butterfly army!
We had to part ways then, but she invited me to talk to her in the library. I think I’ll at least wait until I stop finding butterflies on my clothes before I seek her out.

The Equinox Festival is over once again. Previously, I have spent the Equinox Festival in my room, quietly reading or studying and trying to ignore the revelry outside. But, this year was different. For one thing, I knew that if I spent too much time inside, Xylia would vomit in my shoes and I really didn’t want to have to clean out my shoes again. For another, Vlasia wanted to go out and I wanted to spend some more time with my new friend. I’m glad I did.
Vlasia and I won a breeding slot. Gods, that sounds weird… Xylia and Stolz have produced a Swamp egg and another Forest egg. Vlasia claimed the swamp egg while I received the forest egg, much to my delight. I wonder if this one will turn out anything like its mother… hopefully, it’ll be less pushy. I worry for my shoes.
There was a haiku contest; I entered, but my lousy writing didn’t win. Still, I got five pieces of gold for my trouble and that’s something at least. Vlasia won a domestic fowl and a Gravity elemental stone. I worry for the ducks… I do hope she doesn’t try to eat them. I like ducks.
Oh! There was also a raffle! I won a Leaf affinity dragon, a male that I named Kalyan, meaning ‘fortunate’. He is amazingly different from Xylia. While she demands attention, Kalyan makes no such demands on me. It’s rather nice… but, I wish he was more outgoing. The poor creature spends most of his time hiding under the plants around my room. Is it my imagination, or have they been growing better? Most likely, it’s a result of the fertilizer and not my magic, but I can certainly hope.
Speaking of hope, I have to wonder how I will keep three dragons fed…
[A hurriedly scrawled note here was added, as if in afterthought] The eggs have hatched! Or at least mine has; I'll check with Vlasia as soon as I'm done writing this. She has some traits that weren't in her mother or her father; she inherited her father's ears, though. Her scales are rougher than either Stolz or Xylia's and her fangs are visible even when her mouth is closed. She has large leathery wings; I think she might actually be able to fly!

The Hobbit Party is over! I stayed out of the last festival---which was in February, so you can guess very well what it was all about---so I decided to participate in this one. Also, Xylia was eyeing my favorite shoes. Again. I haven’t seen Vlasia for some time… this worries me a little, but I know that we’ve both been busy with our studies. My studies have been… slow, lately. The plants in my room are really thriving now, which is good to see. Admittedly, most of them are pretty easy to grow, but I’m keeping my hopes up anyway.
Once again, I’m happy I did participate. I met lots of people, including Arhk Johil’s helper. His name is… uhh… actually, I never asked and he never told, so everyone just calls him Helper. There was a dragon race and a guessing game and a raffle… lots of things. I won another dragon, a male earth affinity dragon that I’ve named Kalevi. I call him Levi for short. He’s quite different from my other dragons. While all of the others have their own special spots for sleeping and eating, Levi is very possessive of anything that he considers his. His blanket, his food bowl, his friend… he has become very fond of Kalyan, strangely enough. Perhaps opposites really do attract.
Levi is strangely furry. Instead of scales or leathery skin, he is covered with a very fine layer of downy fur, except for his belly which is covered with pliant plates. He also has a small mane along his head and neck; it continues along his back as well, until his tail ends with a tuft. His ears are laid back, presumably to make it easier for burrowing. He is an excellent digger, which was making a mess in my room since he knocks the plants over and spreads the dirt everywhere. Luckily, Kalyan seems to have put a stop to that.

Day One
I thought it was a mistake at first, when I got that note in the mail. Or maybe that Levi had stolen it from some other mailbox. See, he’s been trying to convert my mailbox into a nest box and… well… let’s just say that, when MY socks go missing, I normally know where to find them. But, there wasn’t a mistake. The Dorhaven's Research and Instructional Institute was doing a study. And they want me to be a part of it. My hands are still shaking a little. The experiment is a bit… err… tricky to understand, but it seems that they want me to raise an egg and keep careful track of what it comes into contact with. Well, that’ll be easy enough. I’m already used to writing in my own journal.
The egg is normal enough. Normal weight, normal size… the only abnormal thing about it is how cool it is to the touch. When Xylia and Jelka were eggs, they were certainly warm. I suppose that might be part of the process used to create a… an affinity-less egg or something. Or maybe not.
Poor Levi… I had to take his nest box---my mail box---down to put the egg in it. I figured that it would be best to keep it from the influence of my own dragons, just in case. No dragon---except for the mother, I suppose--- has seen the egg yet, since I closed the lid to the new box.
The box is normal enough, just large enough to contain an egg and some bedding for it. I believe it’s completely dark inside, but I can’t say that for sure since I can’t fit inside the box. I wonder who else is participating in this experiment… I believe that there were six eggs…
Hmm… I wonder if she’s involved in this…
I plan on carrying the box with me, just to make sure that none of my dragons get into it while I’m out. And, if I encounter any interesting affinities along the way, I can expose the egg to them. I’ll also carry this journal with me as well, just to make sure I don’t miss anything.
Anyway, that’s all for today.

Day Two
I’ve taken the egg to the swamp today, still in its box to hide it from unwanted influences. The plan is to wait for complete darkness and keep watch for any will-o-wisps, because it would be interesting to see the effects of such things on a dragon egg. When I was a kid, I was told that will-o-wisps are ‘ghost candles’, the remnants of those who have died in the swamp’s grasps. If you follow their little candles, you’ll light one of your very own…
Of course, this is total nonsense. Today we know that these so-called ‘wisps’ are caused by nothing more than swamp gas. Still, it would be interesting to study the various paranormal lights. Foxfire is next, followed by St. Elmo’s fire. Although, it’ll be tricky to see that last one, which is seen only on boats. Perhaps I can bribe a captain or something. Perhaps ball lightning as well…’
[Quick sketch of wisp]
I saw Vlasia today! In the swamp of all places… how weird is that? She brought along little Nirvikara, her swamp affinity dragon, and the daughter of my Xylia. She seemed to be doing very well. We caught up on stuff and it turns out that Vlasia is also part of this experiment. Good. I can’t think of a better person than her.
Two wisps appeared in the swamp-lake, which made exposing the egg to them a bit of a problem. But, with Vlasia’s help, I was able to successfully expose the egg to the wisps. Vlasia kindly froze some water into a small ice-floe, which acted as a flotation device for the nest box. I used my own abilities to make a pathway out of the algae, so the egg was safely floated over to the wisps.
To sum it all up, the egg was exposed to:
The swamp, darkness, two wisps, Vlasia, and Nirvikara.
