Ok, so, I stand at 5'3; and I'm 189lbs. My BMI is like...33.2 or something (in the "obese" area").
And I know I'm fat. Ok, so, I'm lucky enough to have a good figure to go with it, but whatever.
Butttt my signifigant otherrrrr (who is reading over my shoulder) is in denial! He keeps sayin' I'm not fat.
Anywho; anyone had this happen before? I understand denial of oneself; but not of thier girl/boy friend. It can actually get rather frusterating...=p

My boyfriend recognizes the fact that I'm larger and I guess he accepts the fact that I'm fat, although he doesn't like me saying it 'cause I usually get worked up over it... but he'll just tell me he thinks I look fine and if it bothers me that much I should do something about it.... I hate that reaction so much.
I tend to get it more from my friends "Oh Sadie! You're not fat!"
 I can't tell you how many times I've gotten it from those two... and in comparison I clearly am >>;
Also, I hate that photo so much, but it's the only one I have of us that's a good comparison. They made me reinact my birthday party they'd thrown for me because the shirt I had on matched my cake, apparently >>; I was also sunburned and had been splashing around in the lake for a whole day... so I was all dirty and gross and sunburned (I honestly couldn't get my hair properly brushed, it was so tangled from the boat rides) gonk
That's what I find frustraiting, the one in the middle especially used to sit there and pinch at her stomach and go "I'm so fat, ugh" I was like "Uh, what am I?" and she was like "You're not fat!" and it's like she honestly believes it... I guess I should appreciate it, but it's hard to ><;

My boyfriend doesn't let me use the word fat either.
I know he understands that I am a bigger girl though. I'm 5'1'' and weigh 163lbs. My BMI is approaching the obese/unhealthy level at 29.5... But anytime I say fat he says "No, you're beautiful. Not fat."
I think people have taken on the notion that fat is bad.
Because I have skinny friends ands bigger friends that tell me all the time "No you're not fat."

I had co-workers tell me I wasn't fat, that I was chubby at most... and I was like "Look at me, I'm fat... it's ok. I am chubby, but I am a fat chubby, and I've accepted that fact"

@The Dread Pirate Ghosty That's actually a really cute picture, IMO. You look so happy. XD That girl in the center...seems like she could twitch and her boobs would fall out of that shirt.
I have some friends who are honest, and say that they know I'm fat but they think I'm beautiful and love me anyway. (Which is such a nice thing to hear.)
@Jesus_vs_Godzilla It's not even that he won't let me use the word; it's that he honestly doesn't think I am...and isn't afraid to say it. In comparison to him (He's 6'3; 171lbs...skinny fella) I'm obviously overweight.
And yeah, people have taken that notion...then again, most people that say they're "fat" are usually complaining, making it a bad thing.

Blame society. xp
We have come to understand the term "fat" as an insult, instead using euphamisms like "big" and "big boned". Because of this, he sees it as self-depreciation rather than statement of a neutral fact.
I think you need to work on emphazising that fat is not a negative thing, that it is just used as such because people like to insult fat people.

@The Dread Pirate Ghosty I'd give her a medal for defying the laws of physics.

I get that a lot with my friends (which are skinny as sticks). "Oh no, you're not fat! You're chubby, if at all." "Listen girl, I weigh twice as much as you, and I'm 10cm shorter. I think that's pretty obvious."
I think Fuzzy Necromancer is absolutely right. If you call yourself 'fat', people who love you will think that you're not just saying it because it's a fact. They'll think you're insulting yourself, because, be honest, 'fat' is not exactly a word you'd normally use as a compliment. So therefore, they can't understand why you call yourself that because in their eyes you're nothing to be insulted for. And that's why they try to stop you by telling you you're NOT fat. So, take it as a compliment, not matter how annoying it is, because in my opinion it just shows how much you mean to them.

When my girlfriend tells me she's fat, she always does it with such a negative inflection . . .
