I love lyrical but I really want to do pointe. I can only take one dance class. So should I take ballet (would be year 2, i took ballet & lyrical last year, Mom won't let me this year) so I can get on pointe or should I keep taking lyrical???

EDIT: I decided to continue ballet next year since my friend would murder me if I dropped out of lyrical this year. Do you think I would be able to get on pointe before I graduate (4 years) or would it just depend how good I am at ballet?

this is written further down but if someone just reads the first post i decided to write it here too.

Edit: i was told b/c my arches are so high and i pulled a mucsle(sp) in my foot last year i can never do pointe hre's a pic of my foot (pointed) so tou can tell me what you think. It won't change anything but i'm curious

I think that you should do whatever you need to in order to get on pointe because first of all, you will get more dancing experience and second you will be able to really know what you enjoy doing more. ^_^

number one, i don't know where you dance. but if you were at my studio, they would never let you take a pointe class without 3 ballet technique classes every week. if you don't take all 3 and you show up for the 4th class (pointe) you are told to put your flat shoes on and take the class on demi.

lyrical isnt the same as ballet (not to sound mean, but i've always called lyrical "ballet for people who don't like, or can't do ballet), and for pointe you need the ballet technique to be safe, and strong so that you will not injure yourself.

as for you never going on pointe, whoever told you that is full of s**t, and doesn't know much about pointe.

i have much higher arches than you and am doing just fine. i've pulled muscles in both my arches and i'm still doing pointe.

though because of my very high arches and flexible ankles i do roll over my box quite often. this is dangerous, and thats why i have to be more careful than the other girls in my class.

so simply put, if you want to not hurt yourself, and actually get somewhere with pointe work, you need the ballet. you should be taking more than one class a week if you're truly interested in doing your best, and are worried about your well being.

depends how much technique you have. i've been on pointe for a little over a year and even with 9 years of technique under my belt, pointe was still pretty hard. i like both styles though but i do both so...i'm not really sure what else to tell you. good luck!

it depends on how strong you are, the worst thing you can do is to get pointe shoes before you're ready, do lots of ballet exercises and work hard and i'm sure you'll get pointe

I have to agree with Illustrious Verse. It is very dangerous to take pointe without at least 3 years of ballet classes, taking a minimum of 3-4 classes a week. I know it can be tempting to want to dance on pointe right away, but it is too easy to hurt yourself (especially with feet like yours) without the strength and technique.

As for your feet…you actually have beautiful arches for pointe work. A high arch can be both a blessing and a curse. People with high arches tend to have weaker feet and a harder time controlling their footwork. It puts you at risk for “rolling over” the front of your box. However, with enough strength and control high-arches look absolutely beautiful in pointe shoes and can achieve a better line than lower-arches.

So no, your feet should not prevent you from doing pointe work ever. In fact, with the right training they could actually help you with your pointe work. However, I would STRONGLY advise you to wait on pointe until you are taking many more ballet classes every week. It is especially important with your arches to have enough strength before you begin pointe work. I would be very skeptical of a dance studio that is willing to put you on pointe after one year of once-a-week ballet classes.
