I got an e-mail from the Califonia branch of NARAL today.... Quote: Can you believe this? The same anti-choice zealots who funded Props. 73 and 85 are at it again, backing a different initiative with the same effect: putting our teens in real danger. Petitions for this dangerous ballot initiative are circulating statewide. Tell your friends and family: DON'T SIGN 1249! The so-called Sexual Abuse Reporting Act initiative would mandate that any teacher, counselor or doctor to whom a teen confides in about a pregnancy, miscarriage, sexually transmitted infection or abortion must report the teen to Child Protective Services and the police. This initiative would punish teens who seek help — effectively blocking their access to reproductive healthcare. California already has strong laws that mandate the reporting of abuse. We need to ensure that teens can access confidential health services without fear or intimidation. If you see canvassers gathering signatures for initiative 1249, DO NOT SIGN IT! Please contact me at LHahn@ProChoiceAmerica.org with the date and location of the canvasser to help us track the progression of this initiative. Please forward this message to your friends and family and remind them: DON'T SIGN 1249! Sincerely, Laura Hahn Community Affairs Organizer NARAL Pro-Choice California Links in the letter: Full Text of Initiative 1249The Action Alert for this subject. (Basically the same as the letter.)

Dear god...Every time we come close to crawling 2 steps forward, they try to pass a stupid new law the will make use like 15 steps back. Whats next a law to make pregnant women be confined to their houses with an ankle bracelet to prevent harm to those precious cancer curing fetuses?

Oh yeah, this'll cut down on abortions, because the teens will try to abort themselves, give birth and dump the newborn, or worse.
This is ******** bullshit. The whole point of being able to talk to a teacher, or councillor, is that they won't give out personal information to anyone unless you say they can.
Why the hell is 'doctor' included in that? It's against the law for a doctor to report anything to anyone, even if the patent was raped.
WTF ARRG! scream

Whats next a law to make pregnant women be confined to their houses with an ankle bracelet to prevent harm to those precious cancer curing fetuses? A house? There are tons of dangerous things that can happen in a house. Why not just make a pregnant woman facility with safe items in each cell.. er.. room, and make sure they're monitored around the clock to make sure that they're protecting that fetus all right! biggrin

What the ********? Way to make teens not confide and seek help from ANYONE.
Honestly, then think this'll help or cut down with any incidences of pregnancy, abortion, STD transmission etc.?
It'll make people ******** scared to go to their DOCTORS, not to mention their counselers and teachers. It makes people not go out to seek help, it makes their situations just that much worse because they won't have support or information out of fear that Child Protection Services will get called down on them.
If this gets onto my newspaper, I'm writing a letter to them about it. *lives in CA*

This is just another form of blaming the victim.
Why is it the woman's fault for being raped? "BECAUSE SHE WORE REVEALING CLOTHINING!" rolleyes
I also want to know what the hell is up with
1247. (07-0014)
Marriage. Elimination of Domestic Partnership Rights. Constitutional Amendment
1253. (07-0020) Marriage. Elimination of Domestic Partnership Rights. Constitutional Amendment.
and
1254. (07-0022) Limit on Marriage. Constitutional Amendment.
If a death squad like NKVD is ever formed here, I'll be second in line to join. Some people seriously need some ******** bullets in their heads. mad
EDIT: In Soviet Russia, the bullet put's itself in you!
Sorry couldn't help it

So it defeats the purpose in confiding in someone you trust because they will be forced to alert CPS... Can you stay stupid, dangerous, and infringing upon privacy?

Another problem I see with this is where does it stop?
Our system of Doctors and medical professionals being able to keep information confidential stops discrimination, and also makes it so people can trust to go seek the help they need.
What else is going to get done in the name of "For the Patient's own good" when in truth it's for someone else to pat themselves on the back about being so "moral."

We must think of the fetus! CHAIN WOMEN TO THEIR BEDS UNTIL THEY GIVE BIRTH! scream Seriously, though. This is a load of bull. If a girl got pregnant or contracted an STD, doesn't this negate telling anyone about it, possibly making them try to do something about it their own way? (i.e. induced miscarriage, backalley abortion, etc.) Should this bill be passed, I can imagine the death toll of teenagers rise.. I wonder if they would turn the other cheek on this..

What the....are you serious??? This is total nonsence! not tell anyone your pregnant, or that you have an STD? That is such bull. I don't live in California, but I hope to, one day, and if I have a daughter I want her to be able to confinde with anyone she wanted without fear of being intarogated by the cops and Child Services.

I smell a big nasty HIPPA violation right there. Are they planning on redoing the whole HIPPA legislation dealy now? I don't want to learn a bunch of new "rules" when I go in to work next.
