I've been having the hardest time with one of my stories because I have a character who has a two letter name(It's longer, but I still haven't decided what the whole name is and she hasn't told any one, including me >.O)
Every time I type it, I think it sounding one of two ways, Dee, or Die, and I can't for the life of me decide which it is. So I guess this thread is for two things, 1 helping me decide which way to pronounce it, and 2 helping me decide what on earth her name is!
Oh, by the by, the first few chapters of the story is in my journal, though you may have to be a friend in order to view most of them...

From all my years asociated with Japanese, I think Dee, because di in that language is dee and De is deh.

Glimare From all my years asociated with Japanese, I think Dee, because di in that language is dee and De is deh. i agree, except for one little part. De in japanese is day. if i recall right, the names Sasuke and Daisuke are pronounced sauce-kay and dice-kay, and Rimuki is pronounced rim-u-key.

When people talk about Princess Diana they usually call her Princess "Di"-- and it sounds like "Die."
That's the way I, as an English speaker, would be inclined to pronounce it.

DIA is the key part there for Diana. And for de and day, I also pronounce that deh- it's all the same. Dai is like die in english.
Two years of japanese from a teacher that went to Japan for a mission, plus a brother who went on one to japan. I think I know the basics of Japanese even if I'm not fluent. No offence ment, I'm just a sticklar.

hey, if its your story, you can pernonce it any way you want to. It can be read lots of ways, but ultimately its up to you, the author.

I know, but I think the real problem is I haven't come up with a name for her. I flip flop between both Die and Dee pronunciations, because I don't know what name to give her. She's an important character and something similar to royalty, so I'm wanting it to be a fairly long name, but... yeah. I already have a character that I thought up with Kisa about who's name is Dia, so I'm not sure about having it be a Dee pronunciation. ((Though both Di and Dia look similar when I draw them... hmm...))

Diantha = Elaboration of DIANA using the popular name suffix antha. Otherwise it could be derived from dianthus, the name of a type of flower (from Greek meaning "heavenly flower").
Dietlinde = Derived from the Germanic elements þeud "people" and linde "soft, tender"
Dieudonnee = Given by God (female form of name)
Dilara = Lover in Turkish
Dionne = Means of Zues (female form of the name Dion)

I mentioned earlier that when I draw these two characters they turn out looking similar... Well, about the only difference between the two of them is Dia has slitted eyes, and definitely pointed ears, and probably darker eyes, while Di... Di I'm still deciding a lot of things about. I know she has blue eyes, but how dark they're going to be I haven't decided, I'm also thinking that she won't have very pointed ears(I tend to do a lot of pointed ears when I draw, has to do with the LotR obsession I had back in high school...) And Thank you LeathaMae! Those are very helpful! If any one has more suggestions, I'll probably mix and match until I get something I absolutely love. (I usually make up names, or look up names and mix them with other names until I get something I like. I have a nifty little di that I got from a game that has letters on each side that I use to help me decide the beginning of a name sometimes...)

As Silriel did not mention that the character she is discussing is intended to be Japanese or in a Japanese environment, I don't see how anything about Japan is relevant anyway.

Di is short for Diane, or Diana.
So it's 'Die'
It really depends on what language it's in when the name is 'Dia'
