it depends on the context in which you use it. if it is used in something that glorifies GOD like a song or something, then it is okay. but if it is used in causal conversation or as a curse word or other, then it is best to not used it at all.
hope this helps

its not different than saying oh my "heavens" or oh my "lord"....oh my "god" is basically the same thing. its not using his name in vain. using the G-D word IS.

I believe it is. Think of it this way. Lets say someone replaced God with your name. Would you like Millions of people to say it? Example: Girl hits her foot on a table: "OH MY DAVID!" Or in casual conversation. Girl talks to girl about boy: "And I was like OH MY DAVID! thats so cool!" Would that not be annoying? God hears this every day! =(

JaneGrace I believe it is. =( We had a lesson about God's name at my camp, and at one point the whole camp started yelling "OH MY NATHAN!" at every available opportunity...Nathan was our dean.
But anyway, while Jane puts it very well, I just want to add on something.
YAWEH is the Jewish (I hope I'm right about that.) word for God. They had such reverence for the name of God that they would not even say the word YAWEH. They would use other words, (LORD, almighty, ect) but they would never say YAWEH aloud. Think about how much that kind of respect probably pleased God.
And now, think about the way society today uses the name God.
"Oh my God!" "Jesus Christ!" "Godd***it!"
Every day you could count the number of times you heard either "God" or "Jesus Christ" used in a way that does not suggest reverence, and if you went anywhere in public and actually listened I'd be suprised if you didn't hear it at least 30 times in less than 2 hours.
Do you think that pleases God, to hear his name, which is supposed to be revered above all others, thrown around like it means nothing at all? I don't think so.

I agree with Spastic waffles :] God's name is supposed to be used in reverence, not casually thrown around.
However, using God's name in vain isn't just using God's name like a curse word. It's so much more than that. In that verse [Exodus 20:7, just citing it razz ] the word "take" means "carry" or "bear" and "vain" means "deceitfully." So, taking the Lord's name in vain isn't simply talking about using His name casually - it's about bearing His name deceitfully. So, when we become Christians, the Bible says that we take His name. And taking His name in vain is when we say that we're Christians, but we live a double life and follow the world rather than following God.

If you don't mean it, don't say it. "Oh my God" has a very specific meaning, but if that's not what you mean when you say it, say something more accurately reflecting you meaning.

lol id rather say oh my god then oh my satan. when i say oh my god, personally, i dont mean it in a demeaning way, but ironically its like im giving him "recognition" every time i say it. the only thing i have against his name being used in vain is the GD word.....

Think of this What if every time you said "god" you called yourself to God's attention. Like he notices you. Like he says, "What?" Or looks to see you praising him. If you go around saying, "oh my god" all the time... And he looks... and sees you goofing off, not praising Him, not needing Him. What about that?
